Fiction better than non-fiction for recovery?
In this video the philosopher Joe Folley argues that reading fiction is better for personal development than self-help books. His reason is that self-help books are quite dogmatic in their approach. They tend to say, "If you do A then B is guaranteed to happen." It might work for some but not others because life isn't that straightforward.
In good fiction you have complex characters that have a better representation of what it means to be human than what you see in self-help books. These characters can cause us to reflect on our lives and maybe make changes in our lives that are more effective. Good fiction shows and doesn't tell, but self-help books tell and tell.
Could we say that same thing about books on recovering from porn? Has anyone found reading fiction more helpful than books about recovering from porn?
