Does home equity counts toward millionaire status?

My wife and I (both early 30s) own a home with approximately $470K in equity. Our combined investments in our registered accounts currently sit at around $850K. So from a net-worth perspective, we've passed 1 mil already.

Despite that I never thought of myself as a millionaire, because I can't really touch that $470K unless I sell my home. Im curious how many of you would call yourselves millionaires in this situation.

Do you think having $4M 15 years from now is enough for two people to retire on?

My wife (29) and I (32) are aiming to stop working and hopefully live off dividends by the time we reach $4M in investments across our registered accounts. Assuming a conservative 8% annual rate of return and contributing $3K/mo to our investments, I am projecting that to be 15 years from now.

We currently have a home worth around $1.2M-$1.3M based on recent sold's, with $700K remaining principal to pay off. We have no debt. Only other asset is a paid off vehicle.

I'm mostly XEQT and she is VFV. So hopefully the rate of return is higher than 8% and the $4M comes sooner, but you never know. Ideally we want to stop working before I hit 50. My question is, do you think $4M is enough for 2 people to live on if we convert our investments to high yield stocks?

There's also a good chance we'll receive inheritance when we're in our 60s or 70s which would be at least $2M, but I want to plan conservatively, so I won't consider that.

Does anyone think our fascination with liminal / backroom spaces has anything to do with the videogames we grew up with?

I often have dreams of wandering aimlessly through clean, empty facilities. Recently I realized that the same feelings I get in those dreams are the exact same feelings I got as a kid when I played games like Goldeneye on N64 or Timesplitters on PS2.

These types of games are really just built out of “in-between” spaces like empty corridors, sterile labs, hotel hallways, industrial zones, which are all designed to be navigated through rather than “lived in.” And its compunded by the fact that early videogames weren't able to render detail like nowadays, so the spaces feel empty and devoid of character, which is what a liminal space is.

You go through these spaces over and over again which gets repetitive. And so you get that feeling like you've been there before, but you don't actually live there. Again, that's how we define liminal spaces.

Also we didnt realize it at the time, but theres no one in these spaces. Not like GTA where there are NPCs everywhere, in these types of games you're almost always alone until you encounter enemies that spawn. That quiet emptiness gives everything a slightly eerie feeling.

Goldeneye on N64

Timesplitters on PS2

I have the feeling this is the same reason why I'm drawn to dead MMO servers. I kind of gives me the same vibes. What do you guys think?

Struggling to understand why I need Anaconda

Hi I’m relatively new to data science and have always used the pip + venv workflow to install packages I need on a project by project basis. It’s just what I was initially taught and so I stuck with it.

Then I recently looked into Anaconda, which I’ve always heard about, but didnt really know what it was. From what I’ve learned it’s a software that gives you all the updated packages for data science work. But that’s the part I don’t get, because if it updates one package how does it know it won’t conflict with another package you need?

I also read that you can do something like:

conda create -n projectA python=3.10
conda activate projectA

But how is that different than setting up your venv and requirements file in your project folder?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. As you can tell I’m quite novice and just want to make sure I’m not glossing over something with Anaconda.

32M. Slow and steady doesnt always win, but it works for me

Just your average dude with an average 5 figure salary. But I’ve been pretty disciplined with investing a consistent amount every paycheck ($500 per paycheck, sometimes more sometimes less) since my first job after uni. The employee match and DCPP with Sunlife helps too!

Any consequences of quitting frequently?

Basically I have a bad habit of moving onto another match if the opponent is 2 points ahead, even if it’s like 20 secs into the game. I know it’s bad but it’s a mix of ADHD and chasing dopamine.

Fortunately I do lead most of the matches so it’s not like I’m doing it every other game, but I was wondering if there are any real consequences to forfeiting so much?

For COD mobile they reduce your rank, but I haven’t seen it happen on this game so just curious.

Be honest, when travelling abroad do you take every chance you get to clarify you’re Canadian?

Like even without being asked? Because I find myself doing it lol. In Europe, I honestly do find that people’s expressions light up when they learn I’m Canadian as opposed to… what they originally thought 😅

Thank you VV for giving my parents an amazing time

Not sure if these posts are allowed on this sub, but I posted a while ago about seeing whether a VV transatlantic was a good option for my elderly parents who haven’t gone on a real vacation for a long time. Well they just came back and will not stop talking about it!

I was kind of nervous because they are both pushing 80 and my mom has knee issues but apparently the staff took really good care of them, and I guess they made a lot of friends on board as well LOL. Also I snagged a last minute deal hence I wasn’t able to make any reservations for them but they were still able to try all the restaurants on the ship. Their favorite spot was the test kitchen.

Oh and the wifi on board allowed me to stay in touch with them to make sure all was well. I know other companies make you pay for it.

I’ve never done this cruise line myself but now I’m trying to convince my wife! Anyway, thank you to all the staff and friendly passengers aboard their ship (the ship itself is called “The Valiant Lady”).
