DIY mini zines at Imperial Public Library

On June 30th, 2026, the City of Imperial Public Library held a small workshop on DIY Mini Zines! These are mini magazines that can be about anything, from informational and artistic, to political, silly, and comic-like. My personal favorite was the cat behavior zine! I made a little one about People's Press. What kind of zine will YOU make?

Seed Activity at Imperial Public Library

The City of Imperial Public Library on June 30th, 2026, showed kids and adults alike how to grow a lima bean sprout from a plastic bag. Growing lima beans is an enjoyable and educational experience, especially when done in an innovative way like using a plastic bag. This simple method not only allows us to witness the process of germination but also makes it accessible for everyone, including children and novice gardeners. Will you be planting this weekend? 🫛

Minizine and seedling fun at Imperial Public Library

On June 30th, People's Press visited the City of Imperial Public Library and learned how to make a 🧾 minizine!

A minizine is a tiny, hand-folded magazine that can be filled with art, stories, tutorials, local history, or just about any topic you can imagine. They're simple to make, fun to share, and a great way to express creativity.

A big thank you to the library for the wonderful lesson! Stay tuned this week as we share more about minizines and the library's 🌱 Seedling Starters program.

Misophonia Advocacy Has Always Been Rife with Conflict

Many years ago, a fellow advocate received an open letter on Facebook that I still think about to this day. It resonates because the letter shows what can be deeply wrong with advocacy and how egos can get in the way of working together for change. I have removed names so that the events that happened hold more weight than those who were involved. There is no use festering on old wounds other than to preserve the history and provide understanding to those who do not understand why there are such fissures in the advocacy community.

My Father's Guardian Angel

I've been listening to a lot of AfterMass lately while I go about ordinary life. Folding laundry. Washing dishes. Driving through the desert with the windows up against the heat. Just yesterday, I came across the video about guardian angels, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

The Companion I Keep Forgetting

I have spent much of my life paying attention to invisible things. Misophonia taught me that long before I ever knew the word for it. Looking back, I wonder how often my guardian angel stood beside me while I was focused entirely on the storm.

Why I’m wary of repatterning hypnotherapy for misophonia

The biggest scientific mismatch sits at the level of theory. Pearson and Dozier’s ecosystem leans on a reflex-and-reconsolidation account of misophonia. But the 2022 consensus project said the available evidence did not support defining misophonia as a reflex condition and did not support including proposed biological, genetic, or behavioral mechanisms in the definition at all. That is a direct clash between the field’s most careful consensus work and the way repatterning is sold.

Misophonia is always evolving

Misophonia is strange because it teaches you that even your own nervous system is not always predictable. A sound that meant nothing yesterday may become unbearable tomorrow. A place that once felt safe can slowly become difficult because your brain has attached suffering to it. Triggers expand. They contract. They surprise you. They reshape ordinary parts of life.

A Life Lived Between Sound and Silence

Hello everyone! There's a substack I wanted to share with you all called Misophonia Musings. It's mainly a space for people who live with misophonia, love someone who does, or want to understand it better. My friend and fellow advocate helped me make it. Please check it out and see if it's for you. :)

The Wildflower Catholic

Hi everyone, I’m Sharon.

I’m a Catholic wife, mom, and writer, and I recently started a little space on substack called The Wildflower Catholic. I’m still figuring out exactly what it will become, but right now I'm thinking that it'll showcase mostly my reflections on faith, motherhood, prayer, saints, suffering, beauty, and trying to grow closer to God in ordinary life.

I’m not a theologian, and I’m not trying to present myself as one. I care a lot about not misrepresenting the faith, so I’m trying to be careful about the difference between personal reflection and actual Church teaching.

Mostly, I’m just here to learn, connect, and share some quiet Catholic thoughts along the way.

Glad to be here.

Imperial Valley Community Says Farewell to Fr. Ed After 22 Years of Service

It is hard to put into words what someone like Fr. Edward Horning means to a community. For many of us, he has been present in the most sacred moments of our lives: weddings, baptisms, funerals, confessions, prayers, difficult conversations, and quiet moments when we simply needed guidance. He has walked with families through joy, grief, uncertainty, and hope.

For me and my family, Fr. Ed has been more than a priest. He has been a spiritual advisor, a source of comfort, and a steady reminder of God’s love. On June 8th, Imperial Valley honored not only the years he has given, but the countless lives he has touched. Fr. Ed, we are so grateful for you, and we will miss you deeply.

Common argument: If you use facebook, you support data centers

Some online arguments reduce the data center debate to “you use technology, therefore you can’t object.” That framing is too shallow for a project with serious local implications. Imperial Valley residents deserve better than gotcha arguments.

Imperial Valley Behavioral Health PET Program

Meet Gritz, one of the emotional support dogs in the Pet Program.

In this People’s Press interview, Sharon Burns speaks with Brooke Hester about how the Pet Program supports behavioral health outreach, reduces stigma around mental health, and gives shelter dogs a chance to shine.

Gritz came from the Humane Society and was chosen for the program because of his loving, outgoing personality. After completing his six-month program, he will be available for adoption beginning August 1.

Brooke also explains how the adoption process works and why the dogs wear protective shoes during the hot summer months.

This program is about care, connection, and second chances for both people and shelter dogs.
