UPDATE 2: Three days later - "Tried something new"

F59 Had tinnitus for over a decade - I believe it is related to bruxism (teeth grinding in my sleep) - found out on this site that I may have "Somatic Tinnitus" - tried new stretches and jaw relaxation techniques - posted 3 days ago.

It has been an incredible 3 days!!! The day after I posted the loud SHHHHHHHH sound returned. I was feeling really bad about it. So I tried the stretches I posted about again and no change. I got busy that day but I was more annoyed by the sound than usual because it had been quiet for a couple of days.

The next morning I woke up to the loud sound again and I jutted my jaw forward - making a severe underbite face (like a bulldog) And the sound disappeared again!!!! I looked up more exercises or facial movements. Started reading a ton about it and apparently so much is connected to it...it goes from the upper back, to the neck, to the jaw, to the temples. In order to stop the nerves from creating the sound there is so much to be done. Oddly, every time I have ever gotten a professional massage they forever tell me that my upper back muscles are "unusually tight". I am determined to make this right.

My son had shoulder issues from working out so I bought him the link provided. I asked to borrow it and I have used it every day. I jutted my jaw forward when I felt the tension, I did small movement exercises -

  • Chin Tucks: Pull your head straight back to align your posture. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.
  • Side Neck Tilt: Slowly tilt your ear toward your shoulder until you feel a light stretch. Hold for 20 seconds and switch sides.
  • Goldfish Exercise: Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth, open your jaw halfway, and close it. Repeat 10 times.
  • Gentle Jaw Open: Open your mouth slowly while placing a light upward resistance with your hand under your chin. Hold briefly, then relax
  • Occipital Tapping: Cup your palms over your ears with your middle fingers resting on the back of your head (the occiput). Place your index fingers over your middle fingers and snap them down to tap your skull. Repeat 20 times to help quiet nerve signaling.
  • Deep Belly Breathing: Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 to 8 seconds.

IT IS WORKING - and I just feel better...thank you to everyone for helping me understand that tinnitus doesn't have just one cause - that you can get it from jaw issues. This is the easiest to fix and just trying it might have amazing results.

UPDATE: Tried something new and tinnitus has disappeared

I F59 have had tinnitus for over a decade. I thought there was nothing I could do. The sound was like something going "SHHHHHHHHH" in my left ear very loudly to the point that I was missing what people were saying.

I came here to read and to report that I used a massager on my jaw (I have bruxism and the tinnitus developed around the same time my bruxism got really bad). I wear a mouthguard and sometimes I wake up with my jaw being in pain.

Well someone on this site asked if I had somatic tinnitus. I had never heard of it before and I looked it up. So I added a nightly massage of my jaw with a electric deep tissue massager and then added positional stretches -

  1. Clasping hands behind my back and sticking my chest out while gently turning my head to the left and the right

  2. Standing up straight in the morning and doing the same but then continuing to turn my head then opening up my mouth and stretching out my jaw periodically through the day.

Suddenly it was so strange but the tinnitus is barely registering in my brain!!! Could it be this easy??? It is so strange to not hear it anymore!!!!! It's not total silence but the "SHHHHHH" sounds more like a slight background hum. I love it!!! I am hoping this lasts forever.

So loud and then tried something new and it's barely registering as a sound

My tinnitus F59 has been with me since I was about 43. It came on slowly and got louder as the years went by. Recently, its been so loud its been hard to ignore. It came on very loud in the morning so I was reading about bruxism (teeth grinding) and tinnitus. I wear a mouth guard and I also try relaxation and head positions before bed. Today I tried a powerful muscle massager on my jawline to relax my jaw and it was so weird because the sound almost disappeared!!! My jaw is very relaxed right now and I am not clenching my teeth. I am trying to keep my mouth soft and it seems to be helping with the noise. Fingers crossed this lasts. My bruxism and tinnitus seems to have started around the same time.

Serious - Steven Spielberg missed an amazing opportunity

Finally went to see Disclosure Day...absolutely ridiculous. I was SO disappointed because Spielberg had an epic opportunity to show how fascinating alien life could be. Instead it was wholly predictable, mundane, and full of boring tropes about experiencers.

There were so many inter-dimensional paradigms he could have shattered but instead we are treated to the most safe of predictable storylines. The lead up to this film got everyone's attention and then did absolutely nothing to spark the imagination (think of how Interstellar got us thinking about time on planets near Black Holes etc...this movie had every chance to bring this fascinating way of changing our thinking).

Such a let down...

Okay WDW are you paying attention to this sub? At Disneyland today and this isn’t a bad idea

It might be time to remove people from the area around the piano, enjoy the music and not see the disgruntled swindlers. We are not snarks, we love Disney and want staff to be treated with fairness and respect for their profession. It’s time to enjoy the music as it was intended…a shared “live” experience with minimal disruptions from guests.
