Your very own Flatiron residence on Historic Register

First thing I’d do would be to buy gallons of paint stripper to uncover the woodwork. Looks like the side/back of a house is on a creek, which I can only be seen from the backyard patio photo. There’s a wiki page on this place but I was not allowed to post 2 links in the post — please see below in comments.

Off grid and gray

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/584-McClelland-Rd-Brookville-PA-15825/125049094\_zpid/

Welcome to 584 McClelland Road, an extraordinary 127.98-acre estate offering remarkable architecture, complete privacy, energy independence, and direct access to some of Pennsylvania’s most expansive protected wilderness. At the heart of the property is an architecturally designed, approximately 7,000-square-foot residence constructed with timeless stone and cedar. Inside, the five-bedroom home features American cherry hardwood floors, soaring cathedral ceilings, multiple fireplaces, and thoughtfully designed living spaces filled with natural light and sweeping views. A distinctive bridge library connects two sections of the residence, while the fourth-floor observation tower and cantilevered balcony provide breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside. Designed with self-sufficiency in mind, the property is equipped to operate completely off-grid with a full solar array, battery storage, and an integrated 12,000-watt backup generator. Direct access to a natural gas well, supported by a multi-year natural gas supply agreement, provides an additional level of energy independence. Recent improvements also include three new furnaces, three Bosch heat pumps, dual natural gas or LPG piping, natural gas lines to the barn and workshop, a whole-house radon mitigation system, an upgraded well system, reverse-osmosis drinking water, and numerous electrical, fireplace, chimney, window, septic, and efficiency improvements. Multiple patios and outdoor living areas create peaceful spaces to entertain, relax, and experience the property’s abundant wildlife. A stream borders three sides of the estate, enhancing its beauty, privacy, and recreational appeal. Beyond the main residence, the property includes three barns and a private cabin, providing exceptional flexibility for equestrian or agricultural use, equipment storage, recreation, guest accommodations, or the creation of a private family retreat. The foundations of the barn and workshop have also been repaired and reinforced, further enhancing the property’s functionality and long-term value. The estate is bordered by Clear Creek State Forest and offers direct access through the surrounding public lands to the Allegheny National Forest and its more than 500,000 acres of outdoor recreation. Whether envisioned as a private luxury estate, recreational retreat, working farm, self-sufficient homestead, or legacy property to be enjoyed for generations, this is a truly exceptional and irreplaceable offering.

An interesting and unsettling find

The zillow listing for the WV house is a trip. The pictures of the interior, it's like looking into a time machine of rod lore. The pics are from when the rods lived there, you can see all their stuff, and how the furniture was arranged and how the entire house was laid out.

Ps- I feel ok posting because the address is publicly available, the rods posted it publicly in newsletters and posts, and they no longer live there.

Cinderblock Castle of the Pines

3000 Highway 147, Lake Almanor, CA

In Lake Almanor, in Northern California you can own your own fortress! It might be new construction, it might not be. Who knows if it is even a house? It might be fire safe, it might not be. It might have a kitchen, but that might be a closet. I'm guessing someone just wanted a fancy place to keep the RV.

nice tree though

A pink, wallpapered beauty with a surprise in the basement.

I actually love this house, toured it in person, and considered putting in an offer. It's pretty fabulous but it needs a good amount of work. Hoping the buyer does a nice job restoring it to glory! It also has an amazing unfinished attic!

$299k apartment w/ $2k monthly HOA - Someone Help Me Understand the Logic

If you can afford to spend $4k/mo on housing, why not buy a nicer home that doesn't involve an HOA higher than your mortgage?

If you want the amenities of an apartment, then why not rent an apartment for $2k/mo? This is in STL, and you can get a nice apartment for that amount.

Can someone explain the math as to how this could ever be a financially sound decision?
