9 Nelalu - A movie about surrogacy,motherhood ,patriarchy
I recently re-watched 9 Nelalu, and I’m amazed at how ahead of its time this film was. Made 26 years ago, when surrogacy was barely understood in India, it explores surrogacy, motherhood, and the stigma women face in a patriarchal society with remarkable sensitivity.
Soundarya is the heart of 9 Nelalu. She has that effortless girl-next-door innocence, and her performance is so subtle and natural that it never feels like acting. Every expression and emotion feels genuine, making her character incredibly real and relatable. One of her finest performances, in my opinion.
Director Kranthi Kumar deserves immense appreciation for handling such a bold and sensitive subject with empathy and maturity, long before these conversations became mainstream.
Even today, the film feels relevant and progressive.
A beautiful, thought-provoking Telugu film that every cinema lover especially those interested in women’s stories and feminism should definitely watch.
