Out-of-Character moments, canon or non-canon, that stuck in your head

For me, one moment in particular is Ran Mouri in episode 694, The Missing Sweets in the Old Shop (a pre-story episode for Movie 17, written by that movie's writer, Takeharu Sakurai). While a number of other characters I feel were mischaracterized to degrees throughout the movie and tie in episode, what Ran does to Kogoro in the episode had my jaw drop in a "THIS ISN'T RAN!" sort of way.

Kogoro, partway through the investigation of why a group of chocolate sweets have disappeared, starts drinking and refuses to continue investigating due to him considering the disappeareances to be unimportant. I believe that Kogoro abandoning a mystery partway through it is a bit out of character of him but Ran, in response, is hyper-aggressive to the point of her actions just being parental abuse. Rather than just verbally reprimanding him like she would usually, she beats the old man to an inch of his life. Kogoro ends up with two black eyes, Mitsuhiko is absolutely horrified at Ran's beating, and once Kogoro is carried back to the rest of the group, the old man straight up collapses unconscious.

Raven Chaser and the lack of Kir (plus the FBI)

Looking back, I feel that Raven Chaser, M13, had a bit of a missed opportunity at including FBI and Kir in it. As for why I think so, one of the plotlines involves the culprit getting their hands on a memory stick that had within it details of the various Non official covers (NOCs) within the Black Organization (BO). While such a stick ending up in the hands of someone outside the BO is obviously a BO concern, I feel the movie glosses over the concern the memory stick contents being seen by an outsider would have on Conan and a number of his allies.

At this point in the anime, April 2009, not only has it been revealed that the BO has been infiltrated by undercover agents but that Conan and the FBI has learned that there is an active undercover agent within the BO, Kir (real name, CIA agent Hidemi Hondou). Within her work as a BO agent, Kir is a NOC using the public persona of newscaster Rena Mizunashi. Considering how much of a deal it was made out in the-then still very recent Clash of Red and Black mini-arc of the FBI having a direct line to the BO, such a list of BO NOCs leaking out should worry Conan. Such a plotline could've followed through with a plotline of Conan contacting the FBI about such a list and the FBI debilitating how actively involved it wants to be in trying to retrieve the stick considering that multiple Prefectures of police are already trying to find the culprit who just happens to be in possession of the stick. Such a plotline could play into what the Beika Files described as the apparent themes of danger and escalation. While it would be nice for the FBI to get the stick for themselves, taking action, especially when there is an active police investigation, risks revealing the full scale of the FBI's presence to Japan's police forces which could quickly domino to the reveal of the BO's existence to said police forces, placing a bunch of people in danger.

Instead, Kir is conspicuously completely absent from the movie, not to even be mentioned. A scene where Conan could've been talking with Kir about the stick instead has him speaking with Vermouth. Just in general, this lack of Kir and the FBI does play into a critique of Raven Chaser made by Beika Files (one I share): the themes of danger and escalation mostly being talk until late into the movie.

Art Style Opinions, some out of the norm

I do generally have a feeling that there is a consensus towards certain certain options regarding the art style. I personally have some opinions of it that might be a bit out of the norm so here they are.

  1. One of the worst eras of the Conan anime art wise is much of the Masato Sato directorial era (333-504) and the era where Mari Tominaga was character designer (356-504). Having a visual refresh was probably a good idea. The visuals of the first Yasuichiro Yamamoto directorial era, as it neared its end, struggled at times in more atmospheric moments once the permanent switch to digital happened and character designs were starting to degrade a bit. However, the Sato era degraded itself rather quickly with key frames being often very bland and wonky. This, mind you, isn't a result of Sato or Tominaga themselves but a general shake up of the Conan anime staff starting in 2003 along with a move to a greater reliance on outsourcing. For the most part, the only saving grace was the extensive use of shading but even that had to fight a dulled out color palette and, due to the overly subdued expressiveness of characters during their period, the shading only really shined in moments of action or aura farming.

  2. The initial return to Masamoto Sudo's character designs and the general changes to the art style at the start of the Koujin Ochi directorial era (episode 505) thus felt like a breath of fresh air. The character designs have appeal that they lacked during much of the Sato era (and would gradually lose in the nearly two decades since 505), the color palette doesn't look washed out, characters properly are able to express exaggerated emotions, and, at least early on, the show can still get atmospheric through shifts in the color tone and the usage of shadowing if needed. The issue with the style is that it has far outstayed its welcome and degraded in such a way that many of its strengths have been chipped away.

  3. The greater usage of variable line weights in the last few years, while not fixing the issues with the current art style fully, do allow for some really striking shots, something needed sorely in a show where I think one of the major visual issues is just general blandness.

  4. Adding a filmic filter would really help with the animation and could get us closer to the atmosphere present in the cel animated era. Just look at the remake of opening 1 to see what I'm talking about.

  5. I think an ideal visual refresh would do best at just trying to translate the modern Gosho style one to one and instead experiment with blending aspects of the different art styles the anime has gone through over time in order to create something that works well in an anime that presumably is going to continue airing weekly. Taking notes from the currently running Yaiba adaptation wouldn't hurt.

Movie 10 Questions

Finished watching Movie 10, Private Eyes' Requiem on YouTube yesterday and I have a bit of a question. Was Suehiko Itoh blinded by the car crash? Wondering if he was because, if he was, I question how he would be able to use the camera, know where everyone was in general, and know that Mouri was surrounded by cops. However, if he wasn't blinded, serious questions arise as to why he never noticed that there was what looked to be a little kid situated next to Kogoro (when he thought he had scanned Kogoro and Shinichi), never questioned why the kid reappeared when Shinichi and Heiji solved the case, and why he never questioned that he never saw Shinichi?

Also, just in general, when Conan answers the second call, how does Suehiko know that "Shinichi" answered without even hearing a voice? Is there some sort of tracker built into the phones?

Episode 356 clip on Netflix Anime

Netflix just uploaded a clip of this episode on their anime YouTube channel sub-only despite this episode not being available for streaming in the United States.

Is this an indication that this episode might be among the next set of Episode Selections?

Movie 8 thoughts (but more just a rant)

Just finished M8, Magician of the Silver Sky on YouTube and I have to say, of the first eight movies, it's easily what I think to the weakest.

There are some strong character moments with the Kid and Conan dynamic and a compelling moment regarding Shinichi's relationship with Ran but it's undermined by fundamental flaws that includes.

  • An initial Kid encounter where not much happens until the chase sequence.
  • A mystery so short and rushed that it feels like it was only included for the sake of including a mystery.
  • A number of main characters that feel like they're largely only involved because they have to be in every Conan movie (the Detective Boys, Agasa, and especially the Toko Metropolitan Police get hit the hardest).
  • An Eri appearance that goes nowhere.
  • A climax that is too talky for its own good, being much more tell than show.

While different versions of these flaws were present in previous movies, the way they pile up here is detrimental to the quality of this film.

Questionable and/or dumb Murder Methods?

Recently, I just watched episode 263 and I personally felt that the steps taken to murder the victim in the first case, the Naniwa Swordsman case, weren't well thought out in hindsight. The culprit is extremely reliant on various peoples acting exactly how he wants them to act and bystanders not taking action on the suspicious person walking around carrying an equipment bag. If anybody would've done anything else and realized in some way that Tarumi was alive anytime between him being found in the storage room and him entering the shower room, the plan would've fallen apart. Heck, if Tarumi does anything other than walk to the shower room wearing the armor and carrying the bag, the figurative cat is very likely out of the bag.

Thinking of this, what are some other moments where the way the crime is conducted and/or covered up seem questionable if not dumb in hindsight?

Conan's and Ran's first ever voiced appearance (I think), a 1995 Shounen Sunday advertisement

Not completely sure if I can verify the initial release date but multiple sources seem to say this released sometime in 1995, the year before the anime first came out. If correct, while this wouldn't be the first animated appearance of Conan Edogawa or Ran Mouri (both made quick silent cameos in the final episode of the first Yaiba adaptation), this would mark their first voiced appearances to my knowledge.

What makes this interesting is how, even in this very early stage, there are multiple aspects of this commercial that align well with the future anime adaptation. While there are areas of difference like Conan's clothing, the general look of the commercial veers pretty close to the initial look of the anime (albeit with more heavy shading) and the voices of the two were provided by their then-future anime VAs, Minami Takayama and Wakana Yamazaki. It's kind of astonishing that either the voices were already set for the anime or whoever picked the anime voices liked the VAs in the ad so much that they let them reprise for the anime.
