Little Island's new lineup is out. What are the can't-miss shows?

Little Island just dropped its late-summer lineup and I'm having the same problem I have every year: a lot of these shows look interesting, but I know almost none of the artists.

In past seasons I've discovered some great performances there, but I've still had mixed luck. Plus, the shows tend to sell out before I figure out what's worth booking.

For those who follow, what jumps out from this year's lineup? Curious what people are excited about and how you decide which Little Island performances are worth taking a chance on.

Things happening in NYC this week (June 22-28): Wimbledon in Central Park, a week-long anti-tech festival, drag bingo for transit nerds, and more

I spend an unreasonable amount of time digging through event calendars, so here are some of the more interesting things I found happening around NYC this week. A few highlights:

  • Wimbledon is building an actual grass tennis court in Central Park and letting people enter a lottery to play on it.
  • A week-long "Summer of Ludd" festival is taking over the city with anti-tech talks, mass poetry readings, communal lunches, sewing workshops, and an event called Stevie Wonder vs. The Nazis.
  • Riders Alliance (the transit advocacy nonprofit) is hosting drag bingo in Astoria, including a presentation ranking subway lines on the Kinsey scale.
  • A Pride-themed astronomy night in Downtown Brooklyn with science talks, trivia, and drinks.
  • A walking tour covering 160 years of LGBTQ history on the Upper West Side.
  • A giant vintage/fashion market in Greenpoint with 50 vendors and a rooftop.
  • A cocktail-making class at PDT focused on bourbon.
  • A PowerPoint-style "Pitch a Friend" night where people present their single friends to a room full of strangers.

I put together a full list with ~20 events here: https://cityhappenings.substack.com/p/things-to-do-in-nyc-this-week-june-e4e

What's the best thing you're looking forward to this week?

Interesting NYC events this week (June 15-21)

Some of the more interesting things happening in NYC this week:

  • A sunset boat tour explaining how zoning decisions transformed the waterfront over the last 25 years
  • A live orchestra performing the score of Encanto while the movie plays
  • Free canoeing in the Gowanus Canal
  • A folk music festival spread across Governors Island
  • A Juneteenth jazz festival in Harlem
  • A touring Murder, She Wrote audience participation show

I spend way too much time digging through event calendars, so I put together a list of the most interesting things I found happening this week.

A few NYC events this weekend (aside from Knicks / World Cup watch parties)

A handful of things I came across while planning my weekend:

• Yves Saint Laurent Vintage Pop-Up at ICP (Saturday) - A one-day pop-up with vintage YSL pieces curated by fashion historian Lilah Ramzi. Even if you're not buying anything, seems worth stopping by to browse.

• Art Groove Group Exhibition in Chelsea (Saturday) - 30+ emerging artists, DJs, live music, fashion, free ice cream, and a gallery opening that sounds a lot more lively than your typical gallery opening.

• The Devil Wears Prada Drinking Game at The Bell House (Saturday) - Performers act out the movie while incorporating drinking challenges. Feels like a guaranteed good time.

• Under The Trees in Central Park (Sunday) - A creative afternoon with sketching, writing prompts, ice cream, and generally touching grass in a productive way.

• Alexander Hamilton Walking Tour (Sunday) - Follows the actual NYC locations tied to Hamilton's life. Good excuse to wander Lower Manhattan if you've somehow never done the tourist thing.

• Pioneer Works Second Sundays (Sunday) - Probably my favorite thing on this list. Free open studios, music, workshops, and art spread throughout the campus in Red Hook.

• Prideful Poetry in Queens (Friday) - LGBTQ+ poetry and spoken word performances followed by a community gathering.

Anyone else have interesting plans this weekend? I put together a much longer roundup of NYC events every week here: https://substack.com/home/post/p-201124926

Always looking for things I missed.

I think one of the best parts of NYC summer is its recurring traditions. What do you never miss?

One of the stranger side effects of keeping track of NYC events is that I don't really measure the year by months anymore.

I don't think, "it's June".

I think:

  • Tribeca is back.
  • The Philharmonic concerts are starting.
  • Outdoor movie season is here.
  • It's time to overspend at every outdoor market.

I've realized a lot of my favorite New York experiences aren't the flashy one-off events. They're the annual things that come back every year and make the city feel seasonal.

A few that I'm personally building my week around:

• The Gramercy Tavern Greenmarket lunch series. Walking through Union Square with chefs before sitting down to a 4 course lunch feels like an extremely luxurious way to spend a Friday.

• Pioneer Works Second Sundays. Probably my favorite recurring excuse to wander around Red Hook and discover new artists.

• The Vale rooftop movie series. I maintain that almost any movie becomes better when you're watching it outside in the summer.

• The Philharmonic concerts in the parks. You definitely don't need to be an orchestra person. Free live music is always fun.

What recurring NYC summer traditions do you never skip?
