name suggestions for this cutie?

i’ve had this beautiful blue shubunkin for a few months now but still haven’t decided on a name that sticks 😭 it’s too early to tell their gender but as their body grows it’s looking towards female. could be wrong though. i’m excited to see their colours come out! i came home from a 7 day trip and the orange dot had suddenly appeared it was a lovely surprise 🥰

enjoying the last views of this scape before tank upgrade

today i bought my goldies a massive upgrade from their current 150L , a 300L 5 foot long aquarium that will come in a week (ciano emotions 150) . i’m aware 300 litres is smaller than suggested but they are sure to enjoy the massive horizontal swimming space! (plus my floors won’t take more than this weight lmao- when i move out they’ll get the giant paradise that they deserve) im thinking of keeping the ‘tree’ in the left corner of the new tank, along with driftwood reaching out into open space, lined with rocks and long stems in the back, with the planting becoming shorter as the driftwood ends for a nice transition into the open space for them to swim. the only concern i have is filtration- there is currently an all pond solutions 1000 canister, but im not sure if it’ll be enough for 300 litres. should i get another one to run alongside it?

canister filter and purigen

FINALLY got round to buying a canister filter! i had 3 internal filters before which required constant maintenance and simply didn’t do enough whilst looking horrendous. i added purigen which has definitely helped alongside the canister to clear the water. after only a few hours in, i think the water is looking great! i’ll update when it takes its full effect. the next step is to save up for a MUCH larger tank whilst attempting to get rid of green spot algae and diatoms. but hopefully this new filter may help. (the canister drained a significant amount of water so i’ll be topping this up tomorrow)

i love capturing them doing this silly thing

i like to think he is yelling at me to give him food. and in today’s case, yelling at me because he ripped his fin. i don’t even know how he managed it. there is nothing sharp 💀 he is a menace. he got very excited for breakfast today so must have caught it on a plant. some are glued to rock so perhaps it was the glue. i may try to file some of the ragged glue edges

account with a huge following

don’t know too much about axolotl care but surely this isn’t right? poor guy has no floor space. any move risks slicing himself on plastic 😭

heavily planted goldfish tank!

almost 4 years ago, i discovered a goldfish in my sisters bedroom, rotting away in one of those plastic containers with the palm tree (you know which ones i’m talking about). turned out she had won it at the fair a week prior and my family purposely didn’t tell me because they knew i’d kick off with my ‘animal rights bullsh*t’. i couldn’t count the times i was told it was ‘just a fish’ and would die in a week. i’m lowkey autistic af so ofc i had a major meltdown which led them to finally letting me attempt to improve the poor things life. i had absolutely no knowledge on fish care but knew this was so wrong.

i purchased a second hand 50L tank and bought a filter, sand, conditioner and a light and a friend (miss and mr fish lol) . i didn’t learn about the nitrogen cycle until a good 6 months in, so today i am in disbelief the fish made it though.

when both fish were around 2 years old, i purchased this current tank (150L). i moved them to their new tank, and they developed a colouring so bright. they bred and the female produced a lot of eggs (they ate them lol)

a few months ago, my original goldie died from being egg bound. i think this was probably due to her being badly bred or difficult early life. i was distraught and couldn’t leave the house for weeks except for work. i absolutely loved her to bits.

after her death, i rescaped the tank as i had been really getting into aquascaping. i purchased a friend for mr fish. there was a ph crash and cycle crash which had me spending 24/7 doing maintenance and medication. all is good now, except for a slight swelling in mr fish’s eye which i’m treating with epsom salt baths every other day which is slowly working.

i’ve spent possibly over £3000 on these goldies, endless time, and so many emotions. but every thing is worth it to see them happy and healthy. i absolutely love them. i’m hoping to upgrade their tank in a year or so. but im a broke student so im doing my best.

even now my family still tell me “its just a fish, they only live a week, they are boring, just get rid of them, they only need a bowl, etc…” and it makes me very upset. it seems like empathy for living creatures is rare. i’ll put my goldfish’s health and happiness over mine any day. it’s our job as humans to care for and help animals around us. unlike us, they can’t just get up and move when something in their environment is wrong. they need our ability to be compassionate and responsible for something we humans bred to be displayed in our homes.

shallow long accessories

hi all! i am looking for lighting, a HOB filter and heater for my new aquarium that is arriving tomorrow. it will be heavily planted. i want substantial lighting that will allow good viewing and provide good growth for low tech plants and some easy red plants. the stock i plan is- cherry shrimp, pygmy corys, chili and neon green raspora, a pair of honey gouramis, and perhaps some clown killifish. the tank is the OptiClear90 (60 litre, 90W x 27D x 30H cm)
