My boyfriend (36 m) and I (41 f) have been dating for 6 years and are going on our first international vacation (holiday) together to Perth and Brisbane in October of this year. While we are there, we plan to do a lot of sightseeing. Australia Zoo, Rotteness Island, Aquarium and so on. We're very excited and can't wait to enjoy all of the natural beauty and the people and everything else it has to offer. I love the ocean and can't wait to watch the sunset over it and enjoy all of the gorgeous fish and coral. Last night while laying in bed, he started scrolling and came across an article about a great white shark attack off of Rotteness Island. Very sadly, the man lost his life. He said that he would not be going into the ocean. I said that the risk is minimal and that there are "rules" that we can follow to lower the risk. Like, don't swim early morning, at dusk, when it's murky and if there is bait in the water. I also said that they have some netted beaches to help keep sharks away from swimmers. He continued on to tell me about another attack near Sydney and that rising water temperatures and migratory changes make it dangerous. He will mot be going in. I said that I don't think it's that dangerous and that I wanted to go in. After all this may be my only chance. He doesn't have to go in but don't steal my joy. He said that if anything happens to me, it would ruin his trip. So is it safe to swim? Or is my boyfriend right and we should stay out of the water? Thank you for your help!
