Hey all, I’m trying to convince my band to switch to Drop D, but they’re still a bit negative about it. We currently play covers of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but we’re also starting to write our own material and it’s heading in a more modern metal direction.

I’m not trying to force anything — I just want to show them the benefits of Drop D and why it could help our sound and songwriting.

What are some solid positives of Drop D that I can bring to them, especially for a band that mixes classic metal roots with more modern ideas?

I’ve been listening to Maiden for 20 years and I also play guitar. The problem is, everything I write ends up sounding like an Iron Maiden song.

How can I break out of this "Maiden style"? Could you recommend some metal bands with a more Phrygian dominant or generally exotic sound to help me find some new inspiration? Any other guidance welcome, thanks!
