The really fascinating part is that the St. John’s Water Dog wasn’t a carefully standardized breed in the modern sense. It was a working Newfoundland dog developed by fishermen. Dogs were selected for intelligence, swimming ability, endurance, retrieving and willingness to work. Those qualities became part of the foundation of the Labrador Retriever.
