Advice for a novice painter
Hello all. First off, my credentials are as follows: 21 years as a detailer, 16 years as a paint correction specialist, and two years as a certified C6 ceramic coating installer. I have worked in paint shops in the past, prepping for paint, then de-nibbing, smoothing burn-ins, razoring and sanding runs, and sanding to match texture. Not to brag, but I'm pretty good at what I do. Recently, I have decided to pick up where I left off regarding auto paint. I have decided to tackle what I see as a simple fix, and I want to know if my approach is correct. This is the rear window of a 2016 Civic, and I have decided to repair the flaking on the sides, below the body line. My plan is to tape off and mask at said body line, mask the window and everything not being repaired to avoid overspray. I then plan to sand down the area with 600 grit, use a degreaser/wax remover, then primer the area. Once that dries, I'll apply a coat of the paint (color code matched), then once dried, apply two coats of clear. I also have a spot blender solution to apply to blend the old clear to the new. I plan to come back after a week and de-nib and lightly sand with 2000 grit to smooth out the burn-in. My question is simply, "is this the correct approach?" Or would anyone advise something different, such as extending the work area further out to the body rather than keeping it below the body line? I told the customer that I could take care of the sides, but I likely wouldn't touch the top, as that would likely entail a full paint job on the roof. Any and all advice is welcome. TIA
