Paint recommendations for brownstone steps

Looking for specific product recommendations for painting exterior brownstone steps. The steps have been painted in the past. 50% of the original material is exposed after scraping, however the rest of the paint remains. What do you recommend?

The rep at Benjamin Moore recommended Coro tech Command. However, that is an acrylic urethane enamel paint, and my research says that those can cause serious issues on brownstone because they are not breathable.

I also looked into mineral paints (Keith brand came recommended), however those appear to be formulated for bare masonry and don’t work well over existing paint.

I work in the trades and do a fair bit of interior painting. But I am not a painter and never paint masonry. So any assistance would be appreciated.

Painting contractors — what would you charge for this new construction job?

New construction interior: * Approx. 9,000 sq. ft. of actual Sheetrock surface * bare/new construction

For those of you who bid based on actual drywall/Sheetrock square footage, what would you charge per sq. ft. for primer + ceilings + walls on a job like this?

I usually do most of my new construction work for a house build company who normally has the drywallers prime everything, paint ceilings, then they have me come in after for paint. I also usually charge them based on their floor square footage so I want to make sure I’m bidding this job correctly and not over/under bidding. Thank you so much for the help/insight🙏🏼🙏🏼

Mist coat

Hello, Ive just had my ceiling plastered and plasterer told me to give it a mist coat of paint before normal emulsion. I'd never heard of this before but obviously I'll do it. Just wondering rather than water down emulsion myself and probably get ratio wrong and ruin it, are the ones you buy already watered down just as good and any recommendations of decent one, or are the buy ones rubbish

Fibreglass reinforcement

Anyone ever done this? They want fibreglass and epoxy gel to reinforce joints where the drywall butts up against the door frames. Tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Aura Matte won’t cover

Hey all,
I’m painting an interior for a client.
Pre existing white walls, smooth finish.
He’s specced Aura Matte and we’re 3-4 coats in and still not fully covered.

Colors are CSP 690, CSP 720 and a bright yellow 2020-10.

Local paint stores are recommending tinting the primer to the finish color but that’s not getting us anywhere.
The primer seems as translucent as the topcoats.

I’m considering tinting the primer a medium gray like we used to do with reds in the pre Gennex days.

We experimented with Aqualock black as a primer and got good coverage but I can’t be sure the black isn’t casting through the topcoat and affecting the color.

Anyone been in this position and figured out a good solution?

Why are a couple spots on my cabinet a bit different (level and texture)?

I’m converting an arcade machine and needed to paint the side white after realizing vinyl wrap wasn’t cutting it. Sanded the laminated MDF, Primed with Behr Acrylic-Alkyd enamel undercoater, sanded, then painted with Behr cabinet, door, and trim enamel in a satin finish, sanding between coats. in person it’s not bad (for someone like me who never painted outside of art classes before) but you can see with flash on in the 2nd and 3rd pictures that there’s a couple weird spots. I’m not upset about it as it looks good enough to me so i’m going to sand it with a fine sandpaper and let it cure for like a month before slapping some side art on so i’m not too worried but i would still like to learn. Why did this happen and how can i avoid it in the future?

Best paint for the money

Getting ready to do a complete remodel on my dads old house and we are looking for the best bang for buck as far as interior paint goes. I know quality paint comes out better because of coverage, but what brand is cheapest while still providing quality?

How bad is this painter?

A few months ago I hired this licensed, bonded and insured company with 100% 5 star reviews and mostly around painting.

Once they started their work, it seemed clear to me they were even getting basics wrong. I never saw them sand a surface, after the first coat there were so many errors.

Since then, they have been trying to fix things but it’s obvious they don’t have the skill for this level of job and are struggling. The owner is actually nice and promises he will fix things but so far quality is still pretty bad.

Couple of days ago he asked for final payment, I told him let’s let the paint dry and I will do a final check. Oh the final check I discovered paint is already peeling off in 2 days but more importantly he has ruined my metal roof of more than $50k. I asked him to come and clean it and he told me he is out for a couple of days. This has been the pattern throughout the job wherein he comes for a day or 2 and then vanishes and j presume he is doing more jobs.

Not looking for legal advice, but I wanted to get a sense if people here think I should continue with him or cut my losses and hire someone competent. For the roof, I think to preserve my warranty, I need to hire a professional inspector, because I also need to understand if I need to file a claim on his insurance.

Per my contract, i need to give him a final notice to repair defects, planning to send that but wanted to get some final independent verification about the job.

Start a company or work for someone else?

Hi, I've been painting for family and friends, and for my dad's construction company here and there for a couple years now, and I want to get more serious about painting and make it my full time job rather than gigs here and there. I've been going back and forth on whether I should start my own business and get my own contracts, or start working for another company. I feel confident enough in basic skills and knowledge to know that I would be able to deliver quality work, but I know there's always more to learn. What do you guys think is the best route to take? Thanks!

Advice for a novice painter

Hello all. First off, my credentials are as follows: 21 years as a detailer, 16 years as a paint correction specialist, and two years as a certified C6 ceramic coating installer. I have worked in paint shops in the past, prepping for paint, then de-nibbing, smoothing burn-ins, razoring and sanding runs, and sanding to match texture. Not to brag, but I'm pretty good at what I do. Recently, I have decided to pick up where I left off regarding auto paint. I have decided to tackle what I see as a simple fix, and I want to know if my approach is correct. This is the rear window of a 2016 Civic, and I have decided to repair the flaking on the sides, below the body line. My plan is to tape off and mask at said body line, mask the window and everything not being repaired to avoid overspray. I then plan to sand down the area with 600 grit, use a degreaser/wax remover, then primer the area. Once that dries, I'll apply a coat of the paint (color code matched), then once dried, apply two coats of clear. I also have a spot blender solution to apply to blend the old clear to the new. I plan to come back after a week and de-nib and lightly sand with 2000 grit to smooth out the burn-in. My question is simply, "is this the correct approach?" Or would anyone advise something different, such as extending the work area further out to the body rather than keeping it below the body line? I told the customer that I could take care of the sides, but I likely wouldn't touch the top, as that would likely entail a full paint job on the roof. Any and all advice is welcome. TIA

Paint pricing

I have a 25' x 16' wall to paint it's 25' high, with established client.

  1. Pressure wash.

  2. has a fresh stucco patch on it that is 3' x 25' that will need primed.

  3. Paint the body one color

  4. Paint the trim (8" x 25' also stucco) and 8" x 24' around a window)

  5. Clean up and haul away the debris. Client buys paint and rents boom lift so just labor. What would you charge

Proper form when spraying low to reduce back pain ?

I do comercial spray gun work at a shop and its my first time doing this kind of work. I do a lot of 5ft by 7ft acrylic sheets and it requires a lot of bending or crouching down to hit the bottoms while still moving side to side. The last 3 months, I have had no issues with it, but today I'm getting some sharper pains in my lower back by my hips and I'm wondering how I should be moving so I dont continue to hurt myself ?

Need a quick fix

Painting downstairs following replastering 4 years ago (hate diy, can't afford decorators, just getting round to it.

Got 3 walls of plaster, the 4th a joining terraced wall with the old grey emulsion on it.

Plan was, cover the grey with a coat of white before our chosen green, then with the rest or the tub of white, water it down to mist layer the other 3 walls.

Checked old paint supplies before buying more, had a 5L tub of Crowther and Green matt white emulsion that we got on offer when a shop was closing. Figured brill, I'll use that, just cheap white matt for misting, and covering the pale grey so the green is starting on 4 even coloured surfaces.

Problem: this paint is weird. Doesn't act like emulsion I've used before, opacity is crap but it does dry a bit more solid. So far covered half the grey and that feels and looks like an ok-ish base to do the green on, but I just don't have a good feeling about misting in this. Seen conflicting things online, polar opposites of "just use the cheapest matt white you can find it's just mist" and "don't cheap out on your mist it needs to be trade white"

HELP. it's taken me days to do the ceiling and skirting boards, patience is thin in the household and I have to get this right - I will never be painting this room again.

If everyone's gonna tell me to go get better white for misting, that's fine, but please tell me why, physically/chemically whatever, the one I have won't work - I really need to convince myself to go pick something else

How to spray paint over powder coated lamp?

This might be too difficult/not worth it, but I figured asking here was worth a shot!

I have this ikea lamp (full name is IKEA PS 2017 Table & Floor Lamp G1517F By Ola Wihlborg). I believe the material is powder coated steel.

I would love to spray paint it to be chrome/silver. From googling I’ve read that I should sand it and then use an enamel based spray paint, but a lot of what I could find is just companies advertising their own products.

Any advice?

Limewash paint first timer here

Hello. I recently did limewash for the first time. I think it turned out pretty well but I am curious if anyone can help me with some advice. I would like to go over it with a deeper color and probably do another 2 coats but I really want it to have more movement and contrast. What would you do to give it greater depth? Thank you for the help. I appreciate it.
