Is it necessary to lube your nuts?

I was talking to the guitarist in my new band about setups and he mentioned he lubes his nuts with every string change to prevent friction. He recommended it for bass as well but I've never heard of anyone doing this for bass.

I had to look it up but for those that are not familiar,

"When a guitar string is tuned, bent, or used with a tremolo arm, it has a tendency to catch or bind on the nut slots and bridge saddles. This binding creates a "pinging" sound and causes the string to go out of tune. Lube coats these friction points, allowing the string to glide effortlessly back into its proper pitch."

Named after the $100 it cost me to assemble.

$30 Donner tuner.

$50 Dr. J Sparrow Driver/DI.

$20 (Craigslist find) DigiTech BP200.

I've been playing bass for 26 years but have never been much of a pedal user and rarely use them in bands. Every group I'm in the guitarists have 100 pedals each so I keep it simple on the low end. I normally just plug directly into my amp for most situations.

But I figured it was time to upgrade from my non-pedal Korg tuner/metronome that I've been using the past 20 years and add a few more things. The Dr. J actually sounds really nice and gives me a bit of tubeyness. The DigiTech is more for messing around at home but there are some decent effects like the chorus and autowah and fuzz stuff. Built like a tank. Drum machine is fun to play along with too.
