Hideous Toughness...seriously?

>Hideous Toughness. The creature is unaffected by unarmed attacks. Additionally, when an attack inflicts damage to the creature that would cause it to go to zero Endurance, it causes a Piercing Blow instead. Then, if the creature is still alive its Endurance score is set back at half its maximum rating.

Every time an enemy with this feature appears on the battlefield, both my players and I know that carnage is about to happen.

Earlier in our campaign, I downed 2 PCs (one of whom genuinely died) with a cave troll slinker, and then today I TPK'd the entire party with an Udûn-orc fire-touched.

In each scenario, those enemies were joined by 4-6 other orcs (against a company of 4 PCs). The enemy with Hideous Toughness far outlasted all the other enemies - this is because at Attribute Level 6, they also have a relatively large pool of Hate and good Armor values to avoid potential wounds.

Even though the PCs were consistently dropping the enemy to 0 Endurance, the enemy just. would. not. die!

At this point, I'm seriously considering some kind of nerf to this feature because it seems like there's nothing the players can do to counter it or play around it. They have to simply hope that the enemy rolls poorly on their Protection rolls. In theory, this should happen more often than it does for our table!

And to my absolute shock, while searching this subreddit, I learned that the current version of Hideous Toughness is actually a nerfed version - it used to be even stronger, bringing back the enemy's Endurance to full rather than just half! Holy shit.

Does it sound like I'm doing something incorrectly? Or are my Hideous Toughness-having enemies just insanely lucky with their Protection rolls?

Clarification on Endurance, Wounds, and Dying (2e)

The core book for The One Ring 2e specifies these points:

  1. When a PC gains a Wound while they already have a Wound, they immediately drop to 0 Endurance and begin dying. They must be healed within 1 hour or they die permanently.
  2. When a PC loses all their Endurance, they fall unconscious.

For point #2, I believe it's safe to presume that merely falling unconscious doesn't mean the PC begins dying, and therefore will automatically regain some Endurance and wake up when the party takes a rest.

However, the book doesn't explicitly spell out what happens when a PC has only one Wound and loses all their Endurance.

Going by the age-old rules philosophy "it does what it says it does," I take this to mean that if a PC has only one Wound and loses all Endurance, they merely fall unconscious and do not begin dying. The core rules don't treat this as a unique circumstance.

This led to some slight confusion from the players in our last session. One feels that this takes a lot of the stakes out of combat. I found it strange that the book doesn't clarify this, but can understand why it would work this way. (Endurance is like a gradually ticking clock, while having a Wound makes each combat much more of a gamble for your PC. If you get lucky in your gamble before running out the clock, the game probably doesn't want to punish you by making you die.)

We've since agreed on my interpretation moving forward, but I wanted to ask here to make sure I'm right.

Are there any options out there for a full PC backup that doesn't require Windows 11 to be functional?

Every few months my PC enters into a "death spiral." Sometimes these spirals take the form of crashing every 15 minutes, other times they manifest as getting stuck in an automated repair loop. The only way I have ever managed to rescue it from these spirals is by fully reinstalling Windows 11 with installation media. (Trust me, I have tried everything that comes with Win11.) I can always still access the BIOS setup.

I use OneDrive to keep all my personal files backed up, and I keep a list of app installers to run after the OS has been reinstalled. I've had to do this multiple times over the past few years, so I can do it pretty efficiently and quickly now!

However it's starting to get exhausting. I hate knowing my PC might start doing this more frequently and important plans will be messed with. It's a pretty old machine - I built it back in March/April 2021. I wish I could just buy a new prebuilt desktop at similar specs but you know how the market is these days...

Therefore, I'm seeking recommendations for a backup solution that fits these criteria:

  • Works with Windows 11.
  • Takes a full backup of the machine.
  • PC can be restored to a backup even if I can't access the Windows desktop.
  • When the PC is restored, I shouldn't have to manually reinstall or reconfigure any apps or settings that existed during the time of that backup being taken.
  • Ideally doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and isn't a subscription.

XP to Level 3 made a video dedicated to Lancer!

For those unaware, XP to Level 3 is a very prominent "D&D-tube" channel that most probably know for making (popularizing?) D&D-focused skits. In recent years though, the channel has evolved to have more of a variety of content, and touches on more game systems than just D&D.

Jacob has mentioned Lancer a few times before and done some actual plays on his other channel, Arcane Arcade. But this is the first video entirely dedicated to Lancer on his main channel, so it's more of an introduction to the system. I think this under-9-minute video does a solid job at tricking baiting hooking potential newcomers.

Moria Journey Rules - Clarification/Question for "Seeking and Finding"

Hi folks, I'm seeking some clarification on the rules for Moria Journeys, specifically the "Seeking and Finding" section on page 38 of the Moria book...

>"To find such a place, the Company must use the normal rules for underground journeys to reach the approximate region. Once there, the Company must make a Seeking Test, to pinpoint the precise location and reach it."

The rules go on to define a Seeking Test as rolling Scan, how it's modified by the Landmark's Renown, and so forth. The fail condition is...

>"...the Company does not find the Landmark and must roll once on the Moria Journey Events table."

My confusion stems from where the first quote block says "the Company must make a Seeking Test." To my knowledge, there is no such thing as a "group skill check" in this game (aside from Skill Endeavors, which this definitely isn't). Therefore, I'm trying to puzzle out exactly how the Seeking Test and the following Journey Event roll work. I can think of these two interpretations:

  1. The Company nominates one PC to make the Seeking Test. That PC rolls Scan as a normal skill roll. If this roll fails, the Landmark remains unfound and the Loremaster rolls on the Moria Journey Events table.
  2. Every PC in the Company makes the Seeking Test. Each PC rolls Scan as a normal skill roll. If at least one PC succeeds, they find the Landmark (or confirm their gathered info was false). If none of them succeed, the Landmark remains unfound and the Loremaster rolls on the Moria Journey Events table. Then they can try another round of all attempting the Seeking Test, repeating this until at least one PC succeeds.

In either interpretation, since the rules don't specify how the Event Target is selected, I'm guessing the Loremaster also rolls for that first. If the first interpretation is used, I think having the PC who made the Seeking Test be the target by default is a good way of handling this, though.

I personally lean toward the second interpretation being the intended one, mainly because the text of the Seeking Test's fail condition says "...must roll once on the Moria Journey Events table." Maybe this is a leap in logic, but I figure the designers specified the word "once" to clarify that only one Journey Event happens even though multiple PCs are presumably making the Seeking Test roll.
