The cusp of hardcore and emo

I was listening to a playlist I have with bands like The Hated, Swing Kids and Embrace and it got me wondering and questioning. I’m sure this isn’t an original thought/question but I’m curious to hear what y’all think.

At what point in the 90s (or whenever really) were bands thought of as “emo” or “emotional hardcore” rather than just hardcore?

For example during the early first wave, when did the label of a hardcore punk band, become the label of “emo”? Because there are several artists whose sounds are far more similar to the sound of classic 80s fast, expressive hardcore punk and a handful of these which had the emo label slapped on them (e.g. rites of spring, Hoover) brought about more bands which pioneered the later 1st wave and earlier 2nd wave (cap’n Jazz, boy’s life).

I’d love to hear what y’all think and what bands/albums shifted the description of more emotional hardcore bands into just “emo” bands.

My college essay discussing Emo music

This was my first assignment for my music degree. I discussed the masked misogyny within the genre (particularly in the 3rd wave) and how it was hidden so well by Emo's characteristics of transgression of gender norms, fluidity of sexuality and gender hierarchy. Enjoy. ESSAY

Live album

With the exception of the stripped down live and acoustic set, why do y’all think there’s never been a Mac DeMarco live album? He’s incredible live, so I don’t see why he’d never have recorded or put one out. I’m interested to know what y’all think.

This song is so unbelievably under appreciated

This is one of my favourite EPs of all time and one of the first EPs that got me into screamo, but the sad thing is that Dire Dire Rocks outshines both other tracks on the EP, I hear covers here and there of calluses and calendars, but I swear no one EVER talks about Void of Space, it’s such an incredible beautiful song

Mike and Del’s friendship

I love how Mike and Del stayed good and close friends and that Del boy was still allowed into the Nag’s head even after Del took Mike to court to try and sue him

Under appreciated joke from season 4

At the start of “watching the girls go by” when Mike is trying to flog his “last two” tickets for the party, he tells Trigger they’re “£2.50 each, but you can have the pair for a fiver!”, and not a single soul in that audience even cracks a laugh. To me, that joke is so simple but great bc of how dim Trigger is but no one seemed to catch it in the audience

Hey everyone, I’m 18 from Australia and I have a love for 70s and 80s British TV (favourites are OFAH, Blackadder, Adam Dalglish series, yes minster etc). I want to know which episodes from only fools you guys come back to the most often. For me at the moment it’s “The Frog’s legacy”, lemme know

Season 5 is in my opinion the least consistent OFAH season, but I think despite all the crap this season gets, the “Miracle of Peckham” is genius, particularly the dialogue between Rodney and Albert in the intro, and Rodney dousing the fish in cologne is genuinely hilarious. Anyone got any thoughts on the episode?
