I (37M) work a government job. I got promoted to a higher department recently.

I've been having dreams of myself rescuing a woman from some monsters lately.

I saw her when she was trying to file a complaint about a false arrest, but I only saw her on a screen.

I met her again when I went to deliver a check to a widow whose husband was accidentally executed due to being mistaken for a criminal. She was in the room above. However, she ended up taking off in her truck before I could speak with her.

I'll admit, after that I'd spent quite a long time looking at her IDs, government files, etc.

And admittedly, I only really accepted the promotion to find more information on her.

We finally spoke when she went to our offices to file a complaint. Due to a misunderstanding, she was about to be arrested by security.

However, I managed to get us both out of there and got in her truck. We then started getting chased by police cars. We got away, but one of the cars crashed and caught fire.

She got especially angry at me as there was a terrorist bombing at the mall and I initially accused her of being the one to deliver the bombs (it turned out they were all just desk toys)

Well, in the chaos, I got knocked out by an officer and woke up in a police transport.

I have not seen her since.

I'm writing a story set in our galaxy far in the future (circa 2700-4000 years from now) and a problem I've been having is that it just doesn't feel like it's 3000 years from now. It doesn't feel like the far future. In some ways it just feels like the 20th-21st century but with advanced technology.

The characters just feel like they're either from the 20th or 21st century.

How do I avoid this? How do I actually make it feel like the far future? And how do other writers accomplish this?

And before anybody says that I should just write what I want, I want to write a setting that feels like the far future.
