I work in banking, I sit at a desk and help people with managing their accounts, doing loan apps, exploring and setting up various products, and assisting grandmas and grandpas with their weekly Online Banking Password Resets. The area I work in has a mix of wealthy patrons and individuals living paycheck to paycheck, so its normal for me to see a range of account balances from $5 negative, all the way up to $8-900k.
This happened just about a month ago. I had a gentleman come in to sit at my desk wanting to ask questions about our interest bearing deposit accounts. We got on to the topic of CDs, and when we went over the options, the low rates (which have been on a steady decline since December of '24) seemed to trigger this fine gentleman, and he went on a rant about the rising costs of everything, finally hitting me with this gem of a line
"Its gotten so expensive I can't even visit my second home in Mexico as often! We're having to get AirBNBs in Florida every month instead!"
It took everything I had to fake sympathy for this chucklehead, especially knowing what his finances were. Like, I'm sorry you can't visit your SECOND HOUSE as often, the last 3 people I helped were struggling to pay bills or overdrafting their account to pay rent, but hey, at least you still have Florida
