Is a BS in Mathematics a good foundation for building Deep Tech AI, or should I stick to B.Tech CSE? Mathematics

I'm aiming to startup in deep tech AI—specifically building novel AI architectures, spatiotemporal models, and theoretical foundations (e.g., geometric deep learning, graph networks, advanced optimization) rather than just applying pre-built PyTorch wrapper libraries.

Im evaluating whether choosing a BS in Mathematics (eg IIT BOMBAY) gives a genuine mathematical edge for deep tech AI compared to a standard [B.Tech](http://B.Tech) CSE / Data Science degree.

Skill Gap: In real-world deep tech, how difficult is it to bridge the software/GPU engineering gap on your own if your degree focus is primarily theoretical math?

Would appreciate honest perspectives from anyone in BS Math, CSE, or AI research/R&D. Thanks!

IITB BS Mathematics — Coursework, internships, and deep tech startups?

Hey guys, Looking for some insights from current students or alumni on the BS Math program at IIT Bombay. 1.Coursework: How theoretical does the coursework get? Is there enough flexibility to easily pick up CS/applied electives, or does pure math take up all your bandwidth? 2.Internships: How is the internship and placement scene for this branch? Do companies treat it on par with CS/Data Science for AI, ML, and quant roles, or is it a struggle on-campus? 3.Deep Tech Startups: My long-term goal is to build a deep tech AI startup. Will the heavy math foundation here give me a genuine edge in building AI, or would I be missing out too much on the systems/software engineering side compared to a traditional CS degree? Appreciate any honest advice or ground realities you can share. Thanks!
