SYEP PARTICIPANTS, THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT WEBSITE YOU NEED FOR SYEP

Hi, the website below is the website to log in your hours to get paid on time, where to see your worksite placement, uploading important documents (if needed), and to sign up for direct deposit/open up a bank account if you haven’t done so (strongly preferred)

Please remember this website. Save this link on a Google Doc, notes app, etc. Save it somewhere where you can find it

FRIENDLY REMINDER: SYEP WORKSITE SUPERVISORS, PLEASE REPORT ALL WORK ISSUES

Thank you to all supervisors for applying to be a SYEP worksite this summer! I already posted what you can’t be doing to the SYEP participants. This is another reminder. SYEP participants, these are things that you are not allowed to do, or else you will be kicked out of SYEP.

Please be on constant alert about emails sent to you about worksite referrals for the participants that you and the participant must sign, timesheet log for the Site Monitor, etc.

Any issues that the SYEP participants reported about you and your worksite will be taken seriously. Please take what I posted seriously, as it will greatly impact your chances of being a part of SYEP in the future!

For SYEP Worksites supervisor(s), you also have a job to do. You need to be watching all of the behavior of your participant(s). You have a responsibility to report any issues that they are causing, and you must do so with honesty. Do not lie about it to get rid of a participant that you, for some reason, didn’t like!!!

To all SYEP Participants, do not do the things that I have listed; you will instantly be kicked out of SYEP!!!

Do not think you won’t be discovered!

Below is a list that everyone who is a SYEP Participant absolutely should not be doing at all:

🚫Attendance & Timekeeping Issues

  • Consecutive Unexcused Absences: Missing consecutive days of work without notifying the supervisor.
  • Chronic Tardiness: Consistently arriving late or leaving early without prior approval.
  • Timesheet Fraud: Forging signatures, logging the hours that they didn't work, or refusing to sign/submit daily time records.
  • Abandonment: Walking off the job site during a shift without permission. This includes leaving for a few hours and then coming back, or leaving the worksite for the remainder of their shift, thinking that no one would notice.

⚠️ Critical Safety & Legal Issues (Report Immediately)

  • Workplace Injuries: Any accident or physical injury occurring on the job, regardless of how minor it may seem.
  • Harassment or Discrimination: Any allegations or observed instances of bullying, sexual harassment, or discrimination (involving staff or other interns).
  • Theft or Property Damage: Destruction of worksite property or stealing company/co-worker assets.
  • Substance Use: Appearing at the worksite under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or illegal substances.

🛑 Behavioral & Performance Issues

  • Gross Insubordination: Explicit refusal to follow directions, complete assigned tasks, or respect the chain of command.
  • Severe Digital Distraction: Excessive and disruptive use of personal cell phones or social media during working hours after being warned.
  • Inappropriate Dress: Repeatedly violating safety or professional dress codes (e.g., wearing open-toed shoes in a warehouse/camp setting).
  • Verbal Altercations: Using profanity, aggressive language, or engaging in shouting matches with staff, clients, or peers.
  • Slacking Off: Not doing their assigned work. Manipulating other peers to do the work for them. Always on their phone without doing the assigned task. Spends more time talking with others, whether it is over the phone or in person, than focusing on the work.

💻 Remote & Hybrid Work Violations

  • "Ghosting" Check-ins: Failing to log into scheduled Zoom/Teams meetings or disappearing during remote working hours.
  • Zero Responsiveness: Failing to reply to emails, messages, or phone calls for an entire shift.
  • Failure to Deliver: Completely failing to submit weekly remote tasks without a good reason as to why and without proof.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: SYEP PARTICIPANTS, PLEASE REPORT ANY WORKSITE ISSUES

SYEP officially starts 2 weeks for Cohort A, and Cohort B starts the week after. Some of you will be at your high school for the first 2 weeks of SYEP and then move to your worksite in week 3. You are only in SYEP for 6 weeks total, and you will only be paid for 6 weeks' worth of work.

You could stay for more than 6 weeks if you ask to volunteer at your worksite or they officially offer you a paid position on their payroll and not the NYC DYCD, which is the city agency that funds SYEP.

Now speaking of worksites, I would like to really remind you all about things to look out for at your worksite. You do not want to be at a worksite where you don’t feel good being there. This summer is supposed to be a summer where you work and learn something while also creating good memories.

PLEASE READ THE LIST BELOW TO KNOW WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR, AND PLEASE BE HONEST ABOUT REPORTING THESE ISSUES. BOTH PARTICIPANTS AND WORKSITE SUPERVISOR(S) SHOULD NOT BE DOING THIS:

🚫Harassment, Abuse & Comfort Level

  • Verbal and Emotional Abuse: A supervisor or coworker yelling at you, insulting you, or using aggressive language.
  • Physical and Personal Boundary Violations: Making you feel uncomfortable by standing too close to you, or touching you where you do not want to be touched.
  • Offensive Beliefs or Politics: Presenting political, religious, or personal beliefs that offend you, make you angry, or make you feel unsafe during work hours.
  • Passive-Aggressive Behavior: Acting hostile, giving the silent treatment, or using underhanded comments to undermine you.
  • Retaliation: A supervisor or coworker punishing you or treating you poorly because you spoke up or addressed a problem.

🕒 Labor, Hours & Break Violations

  • Denial of Lunch Breaks: Failing to give you a break when working long shifts.
    • By law, you are legally entitled to an unpaid 30-minute break if working 6–7 hours, and an unpaid 1-hour break if working more than 7 hours.
  • Overtime and Schedule Manipulation: Forcing, tricking, or manipulating you into staying past your scheduled SYEP hours.
  • Out-of-Scope Tasks: Ordering you to do tasks completely unrelated to your job description, or forcing you to leave the job site to run personal errands for a supervisor.

🔒 Timesheet Fraud & "Free Labor" Scams

  • The "Hours Debt" Scam: A supervisor falsifying your timesheet to say you worked 25 hours (when you didn't) and telling you that you "owe" them hours or must stay after the 6 weeks to pay back a debt.
  • Unpaid Labor Post-SYEP: Asking you to stay and work after the 6-week program ends without paying you. SYEP never pays after the 6th week. Any post-program work must be paid directly by the employer—there is no such thing as free labor.

🪪 Identity Theft & Sensitive Data Risks

  • Premature Request for ID/SSN: A supervisor asking for sensitive documents (like your Social Security card or ID) during the 6-week program.
    • Worksites are not allowed to collect this info. Only give this data if you are explicitly offered a permanent job after the 6 weeks.
  • Document Over-Collection: Be cautious of employers asking for more identification documents than legally necessary for the Form I-9 (refer to the USCIS website for official requirements) as a tactic to steal personal information.

🗣️ Communication & Peer Conflict

  • Poor Communication: Failing to communicate clearly, leading to constant, intentional misunderstandings and confusion on the job.
  • Peer Bullying: Another SYEP intern is bullying you or causing problems to the point where you hate going to work.
  • Slackers / Carrying the Workload: A coworker doing absolutely nothing while you end up doing all the work or their assigned task. If they are also supposed to help you, but they don’t help, and you end up doing the work for them. You are not obligated to pick up their slack! If they are not doing the work, they should not be paid!

Budget Cuts for Next Fiscal Year is Worse Than We Thought!

News about the budget cuts were released some time last week. It is actually looking a lot worse than what was previously said. So every single department is losing a big portion of their budget for the next fiscal year which starts in July and is working on changes to deal with their huge budget cut right now. There is no 1 department that is most affected by the budget cut. Every department and office on campus is losing a big portion of their budget regardless of the reasons why they shouldn’t lose their budget. Roughly around 50%-80%.

Even academic departments that have majors, minors, and courses that are popular with students are getting a big cut with their departmental budget even with high enrollments in their program and courses. Academic support like the Learning Commons, Writing Center, FYE, Academic Advising, etc, are losing most of their budget even with the data that shows that a good amount of students comes to them every semester for help.

So if you expect a certain level of support from them when the next fall and spring semesters start. That is not happening. Don’t know exactly what the changes are for every department, but changes will be happening in the fall, so prepare for that.

Frank Wu “retiring” was because he caused so much trouble for the budget for Queens College leading Queens College to have a lot of budget deficits. Just know that the budget cuts will reduce services to students. Faculty and staff to get reduced hours to work, or they will get laid off because there isn't any money to pay the faculty and staff. Less course offerings because there isn't money to pay a faculty to teach it.

This is not going to be a great year at Queens College. Thank you so much, Frank Wu and your cabinet members, for your hard work.

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies: Take them at Queens College!

Across the country, programs in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are being reduceddefunded, or eliminated. At the same time, public debates about gender, sexuality, reproductive rights, family, and equality have become increasingly visible in American political and cultural life.

Queens College continues to offer students the opportunity to engage critically with these topics through courses in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. If you're looking for courses for Fall 2026, consider:

  • WGS 101W: Introduction to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (Writing Intensive + USED Pathways)-- 5 sections across different time slots
  • WGS 104: Intro to LGBTQ Studies (currently full, but we'll open more sections in the spring semester)
  • WGS 201W: Feminist Theories (Tues/Thurs, 1:40–2:55 PM)-- has just been approved to fulfill the Pathways Individual & Society requirement
  • WGS 204: Queer Theories (Mon/Wed, 10:45 AM–12:00 PM)

We've also recently revised our curriculum to make it easier to pursue WGS alongside another field of study.

  • The minor is now only 12 credits.
  • The major is now 30 credits.
  • Many courses in departments such as Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Urban Studies, Political Science, English, Media Studies, FNES, and History can count toward the major, and the major and minor pairs well with them, making it easier than ever to complete a double major or even a triple major.

Because WGS is interdisciplinary, it pairs well with many different academic and career interests, whether you're interested in law, public policy, education, healthcare, counseling & social work, media, business, or the humanities. We also offer majors an internship course, and we will help place you in a WGS-related internship, too. WGS majors and minors develop skills in critical thinking, writing, research, and cultural analysis that are valuable across a wide range of careers and graduate programs.

The new requirements are not yet reflected on our website, but you can see them here. They should be posted on our website later this summer. In the meantime, feel free to email wgs@qc.cuny.edu with any questions.

Want to major/minor with ZERO prerequisites? Check out the Political Science Department at Queens College!

Edited and reposting for someone from the Queens College forum:

Whether your interest lies in healthcare, business, law, public policy, or much more, politics heavily influences how these fields operate. Every major decision that impacts our daily lives—how policies are formed, who they affect, and what the long-term consequences are—comes down to politics. If you want to understand much more about how our system works in our country or on a global scale.

Most departments force you through a strict, stressful path to complete your degree. The Political Science Department here does things differently!

Their program is built on a lot of freedom. There are no prerequisites, meaning you can take any course, at any level, in any order you want. You have complete control over how you finish your degree. We have faculty members who are incredibly knowledgeable in their field. You can finish the major in one year if you want to, and then focus on other majors!

Whether you want to major or minor, the credit requirements are incredibly manageable and easy:

The Political Science Major (31 Credits / 10 Courses)

A highly flexible major that fits easily into your schedule. You only need:

Three 100-level PSCI courses

Five 200-level PSCI courses

One Research Skills course aka PSCI 200 - Required

One 300-level PSCI seminar course

Because no barriers are blocking you and there are fewer requirements, Political Science is perfect for those thinking of double majoring or triple majoring, or adding it to their multiple minors.

It pairs seamlessly well with business, economics, philosophy, history, women and gender studies, or the sciences. There is also an internship course based on your interests, whether it is in government or law, you will be placed in a Political Science-related internship!

Looking for something to boost your degree? Try our Minors:

  • Political Science Minor (18 Credits / 6 Political Science Courses): A quick way to add a powerful edge to your degree if you want to do Political Science, but not the major.
  • Legal Studies Minor (18 credits): Perfect for aspiring law students. It requires 3 core political science courses and 3 electives that you can choose from various departments based on your personal interests.

There are 3 tracks that you can do, which are also optional to do:

  • International Politics
  • Law and Politics
  • Government and Public Service

If you don't want to be a part of any of the programs, please consider taking some of our courses! We have a lot of excellent and interesting courses!

We also have an incredible Model UN program for those interested!

Want to explore further?

Check out the department website to meet our faculty advisors and map out your courses: qc.cuny.edu/academics/ps

To request an advisor/faculty to talk to:

Political Science Advisor Request

This is the Spring 2026 faculty office hours, ignore the office hours, the red star next to the faculty’s name means they are advisors for the department & their email is all the way to the right:

Reach Out to Your SYEP Provider with Any Issues with Communication

If you're having trouble getting a response from your worksite, please reach out to your SYEP providers right away. Some work sites don't respond even if you email and call multiple times. If a worksite is already doing this, reach out to your provider about this. If they do respond, and what they said was vague, like they didn't say a lot or it was unclear, then that also needs to be reported.

These work sites that do not really communicate well with you or that are ghosting you are already presenting problems, and they should not be worked with. Don't force yourself to work with a worksite supervisor whom you already don't have a good feeling about.

To all participating SYEP worksites. Thank you for agreeing to be a worksite this year for the SYEP Participants.

SYEP PARTICPANTS, PLEASE REPORT ANY WORKPLACE ISSUES!!!

Reposting this Reddit Post from 2 months ago. Please spread the information about this to people you know that is going to be a SYEP Participant at a worksite soon. There are new information that I have included that wasn’t there before.

As you all know, SYEP will be starting very quickly soon in July. You will split into either Cohort A or B.

Many SYEP participants while working at their worksites generally don’t report the horrible issues they experience at their worksites by their supervisors or other co-workers.

Such as:

- Your supervisor tells you to do anything that is not in the job description of your role. That also includes telling you to leave to go somewhere else that is not related to the work of your job description

- Acting passive aggressively

- Making you feel uncomfortable in any way like standing too close to you, touching you where you don’t want to be touched, etc.

- Yelling at you. Verbal and emotional abusing you

- Not communicating clearly and enough with you leading to many misunderstandings and confusions

- Talking about political beliefs and their beliefs offends you. Any beliefs that made you uncomfortable or make you angry while during work hours has to be reported immediately

- Telling you that you owe them hours and they authorize your 25 hours per week by falsifying your timesheet even though you didn’t work 25 hours for those weeks so you need to stay back after the 6 weeks to pay back your debt to them

- Collecting personal information from you like your ID, social security, etc. Only give them these if they are planning to give you a permanent job offer after the 6 weeks are over!

Beginning and during the 6 weeks, they are not allowed to ask you for your personal information! Read up on I-9 verification on the USCIS website when you are offered a permanent job because many employers on purposely ask for more documents than what is necessary to steal your personal information.

- Asking you to stay after the 6 weeks to help them with their work without paying you. There is no such thing as free labor. Any work you do that benefits the worksite and during the worksite’s business hours after the 6 weeks ends, you are to be paid by your worksite. SYEP does not pay you anymore after the 6 weeks of the program ends! You are only paid for 6 weeks worth of work at most!

- Making or manipulating you to stay later than your scheduled hours.

- Gives you no break if you worked 6 or more hours. Legally they are required to give you 30 mins break if you are working 6 or 7 hours that day and 1 hour break if you are working more than 7 hours that day. The breaks are unpaid.

- Any supervisor or co-worker retaliating against for addressing issues that you noticed

- One of your co-workers that is a SYEP participants too, is bullying you and causing you problems to the point where you hate going to this worksite.

- Your coworker doesn’t do anything and you are always end up doing the work for them. You are not obligated to pick up after them

- Other similar issues like the ones I listed

You need to report these kind of issues, so you can be sent to a new worksite. It is for your safety and the safety of future participants. If your SYEP provider doesn’t know about it, then they will assume everything went well and they will keep working with those worksites in the future. Your SYEP provider needs to know everything that is going on at your worksite to see if they should work with them again in the future. Hold these worksites and other co-workers accountable for their actions especially the moment you know that something is off. Listen to that feeling.

I know many of you are afraid of reporting your worksite who have done something wrong and the idea of switching to a different worksite sound bad, but your goal in SYEP is to get a job you enjoy doing and where you had actually learned something.

Once a week, there is one SYEP Site Monitor that arrives at your worksite to inspect any issues that you may have, so please report any issues, concerns, and questions to them as they will report the issues on your behalf. Everything you say will be confidential and anonymous. You can speak with them privately. If you prefer to email your SYEP provider instead, you can do that too. Make sure to have proof of your claims otherwise there is no case.

So please report any issues that immediately happens to you, otherwise you will be stuck in that worksite with that supervisor and co-worker for the next 6 weeks. Which is going to be hell. Make your summer job as comfortable as possible and not to have memories where your supervisor or co-workers who was acting like an asshole or a bitch.

Please remember, for the 6 weeks, you are paid by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, not your worksite!

Queens College is doing big budget cuts for the next year across every single department that is on campus for the next fiscal year that starts in July. There might be a reduction or shift in business hours, staff and faculty might be reduced to a smaller size, etc.

Exactly how big are the budget cuts?
No idea as of right now. Every staff and faculty are still waiting on the news about it. But the budget cuts could go as much as 25%!

Prepare yourselves for the impact that is going to happening from the budget cuts. Big changes are coming!!!
