Hi all. I have done a large amount of research and have made a few decisions based off of that, but I am hoping to get some more tailored answers.
Some info about me:
I am 6' 1" @ 225lbs and slowly dropping weight. In my early 30s. Average of 30km/week but slowly increasing in preparation for my first half marathon in October. I am a midfoot striker. The shoe shops I have been to have told me I have a relatively normal foot and both are the same length. I wear a 12.5-13.
Weekly run breakdown:
2 easy runs around 4-6km at 8-8:30/km each (sometimes on treadmill)
1 interval day, usually 5-6km as well but variable paces from 4:20-6:00/km depending on the workout (sometimes on treadmill)
1 threshold 6km+ at 6:45-7:15 (sometimes on treadmill)
1 long zone 2 run 14-16km at 8:00-9:00/km
I have been running the past 7 months primarily on a pair of NB 1080 v14s. I have some mixed feelings about these, but I would say my experience has been relatively positive. At first I loved the softness of the foam, then started to hate it, then I think I got used to it and have enjoyed the reduced impact on my easier runs. I have had shin splints pretty bad on and off and I have finally gotten to a point where I rarely aggravate my shins unless I am doing sprints. I bought the v14s because they were listed as a shoe good for shin splints. On wet days I run in Brooks Ghost 17 GTX. Also with mixed feelings, but I like how they feel more grounded. I should have sized up and didn't know it at the time. These had been perfectly fine until I increased volume in them. Now on one of my last long runs I ended up with a blister between by big and second toe. I'll still use these but probably only when it's actively raining.
I just purchased a pair of Evo SLs. I have been eyeing them for some time after reading a lot of information here. I want these to be my interval, threshold and race shoe. But my v14s are coming up on the end of their life in the next few months (I am around 500km on them and the foam is not what it used to be), and I'd like to find a replacement. My local shop is limited to Brooks and Hoka, so I have trouble trying on anything else. I have been looking at the Supernova Rise 3, Novablast 4/5, and the Vomero Plus.
Being a larger runner, with relatively average paces and planning for an increasing run volume, and possible pace increases, what shoe would you recommend based off of your experiences? Also, would it be worth adding a 3rd shoe to the mix (not including my current Ghost 17 GTX)
Thank you all in advance!
