Stop Arguing

Look, was Lanterns faithful to the source material? No. Was it a well-written, tightly-plotted cop drama? Not really. But was it at least an intelligent and sober reflection on race in America? Also no.

Warning: Do Not Get Out Of Your Car For A Stranger

Driving home late last night on Franklin, just after one in the morning, a car came up behind my girlfriend and I, flashing its lights and honking. I thought they were just jerks who wanted to pass so I waved to have them go around.

Instead, they pulled up next to me (in the opposite lane) and yelled that my license plate had fallen off. I thanked them and, after a moment, turned up a side street to pull
over and check.

Both license plates were intact.

My girlfriend said, “We need to go. Now.”

So we immediately drove off.

I was perplexed by what had happened. Was it a dumb prank? Were they high? This is the best theory I could find online. Apparently people have used this scam to get you out of your car to steal it, mug you, or worse:

I don’t have a good description of the drivers. It was late and I didn’t get a great look. My recollection is two young guys in a light-colored sedan.

A good reminder to be safe out there. Walk to your cars in groups. And never, ever pull over for a stranger.
