For me, it’s walking out of a retail store without buying anything. I can enter a store with pure intentions, realize they don't have what I need, and turn around to leave. The second I pivot toward the exit, my body completely forgets how to act human. My heart rate spikes, my stride turns into a stiff, robotic march, and I aggressively pull my hands out of my pockets so everyone knows I’m not stashing contraband. As I pass the security guards, my brain frantically starts broadcasting internal panic signals: Look natural. Smile, but not too much, that’s suspicious. Don’t look at the sensor gates. Why are you walking so fast? Great, now you’re walking too slow. I’ve genuinely considered buying a $3 pack of mints I didn't even want, just to acquire a receipt—a physical passport out of the building. My runner-up is driving past a police car while going precisely two miles per hour under the speed limit, suddenly forgetting how to steer, and gripping the wheel at 10 and 2 like an undercover agent whose cover is about to blow.
