Cost of goods and services in Sharn + House reference guide

Link to PDF on google drive

Hey y'all, sharing a cheat sheet I made for my players for the cost of goods and services in "my Sharn". A few things I added that aren't totally up to lore snuff but whatever. I'm using a few other cheat sheets from this sub also, but didn't find a COGS chart ore-made. Maybe this is useful to someone in the future sweet! If not, I'm out the time it took me to post this. No sweat off my back

Description of Sharn to start off a campaign

Hey guys, posting this in hopes to help some lazy DM of the future. I was trying to find something like this to use for my campaign but couldn't find anything. Lots of posts asking for advice on how to write an intro similar to this but then no one followed up and posted theirs haha. Those were helpful but I totally would've stolen someone else's if I could have. I do not claim to be a professional writer or an expert on Eberron, just an enthusiast of both. I think the only lore inaccurate thing is the gargoyles contracting with House Kundarak. Threw that in for my own personal reasons. Please feel free to correct anything else in the comments though! I want to use this for future campaigns and one shots, so even though I already used it on my current party, I'd still like to tweak it for future uses.

Anyways, hope you guys enjoy! Again, I'm not a professional writer or Eberron expert so please don't flame me. Also I use em dashes (incorrectly I might add) to indicate where I take pauses since this is written to be read out loud and not for perfect grammar. So please for the love of god don't claim its AI because there are incorrectly placed em dashes. I'm a) not smart enough to know how to use it and b) firmly against the use of it for my own creative endeavors because I derive joy from attempting to creatively write and draw. Without further ado...

Welcome, adventurers, to the wonderful world of Eberron, the magical continent of Khorvaire, and most importantly to our story – the magnificent city of Sharn. Boasting over half a million residents, the capital seat of Breland is by far the largest city in Eberron. Nestled amongst cliffs near the deltas of the Dagger River and with the steep cliffsides spreading out to either side, Sharn, the City of Towers, had but only one option – to expand vertically. Built upon the ancient ruins of a Goblinoid city, Sharn is a city rich with both history and mystery. And also towers. So. Many. Towers. It’s a city where all of your wildest dreams could come true and you could become richer than you thought possible… if you have the right idea or know the right people, of course. But – it’s also a city where you could be left in a back alley – slowly choking on your own blood – as the Dwarf who cut your purse, and subsequently your throat, ascends stairs while counting your gold. After throwing your purse over the ledge and disappearing around the corner, "That bastard's never going to be caught" is your last thought as the life drains from you. This is the lower districts after all. The City Watch could not care less about some cutpurse slitting the throat of a poor adventurer whose bright, hopeful eyes are now grey and lifeless.

Sharn is divided into many, many districts which then rise vertically into the four main levels of the city, creating even more districts. The wealth of the average citizen unsurprisingly corresponds with the level they live on. The higher you go, the richer you are. The towers in the lower districts are built so closely to each other that the criss-crossing maze of bridges and buildings above lets in only but the faintest natural sunlight, forcing the denizens to rely on the constant artificial light of the everbright lanterns lining the streets. These lower districts serve a purpose though. To be the foundation upon which the great towers of the middle and upper districts are built of course. As you ascend into the middle city, you begin to understand the breadth and magnificence of Sharn. Looking over the bridges you peer down hundreds of feet, knowing that a fall would surely be your death. Perhaps one day you’ll be able to afford a feather token, but right now that’s a luxury you simply can’t afford. House Lyrandar skycoaches zip about ferrying citizens to and from their various tasks. House Vadalis griffons transport city workers to the daily grind. And gargoyles working as contractors for House Kundarak flit through the air carrying parchments in their mouths.

The people in the city are as diverse as the sights you see around the various districts. Every race found on Eberron can be found in Sharn somewhere for some reason or another. An orc is performing a ritual on a balcony overlooking the street in the Callestan district. A goblin artificer is tinkering with his latest invention while huddled under some pallets in an alleyway in the Firelight district. A halfling brawler stumbles out of The Burning Ring slamming a mug of ale while laughing and boasting of his victory in the underground fighting ring. And the humans and dwarves are walking around like they own the damn place, which they kind of do.

As we board a cargo platform filled with goods and a group of House Cannith artificers tasked with maintaining the magical infrastructure of the upper districts, a wizard casts levitate on the platform and we rise further through the city past more bridges and more towers and more bridges and more towers and OH! Those two elves in that window were making love. Doesn’t matter, we've already risen past them and now we have finally arrived in the upper districts. The great airships of House Lyrandar dock amongst the towers to ferry citizens all over Korvaire. The wealthy of Sharn amble about, doing whatever it is those who don’t need to worry about gold do. Just kidding! Those rich assholes are surely scheming for more of course. Always more, more, more with those Upper District folks. At least they aren’t the snobs in the Skyways though!

Sharn is a city where quite literally anything and everything can and will happen, we just have to write the right story together. Welcome to the adventure folks, I refuse liability for any lost valuables or character death.

Alright gents, how often is your son really pissing straight up in the air during changing time?

I feel like movies and tv shows had me so worried about this before becoming a Dad. I remember for the first several months I was religious about slapping a cloth over his penis the millisecond it was exposed to the open air but I very rarely mattered. 6 months in and I don’t even do that anymore

It’s only actually happened a few times to me and he didn’t piss straight in the air, he pissed straight in his face lol

[Online][5e 2024][Saturdays 9pm MST][Weekly][New Players] An OG Eberron adventure updated for modern play!

Edit: I am now only looking for one new player. Thank you to all the more experienced players who expressed interest. I wish I could have a table of 15.

Adventure awaits for those daring enough to attempt to rise through the ranks of Eberron gaining power, gold, and friendships along the way!

I’m recruiting one player new to DnD for my Budding Adventurer’s Guide to Eberron campaign where we’ll be running through four adventures taking you from levels 1-6. The adventures are The Forgotten Forge, Shadows of the Last War, Whispers of the Vampire’s Blade, and Grasp of the Emerald Claw. They were originally written for 3.5e and I’ll be using a conversion guide to bring them up to 5e. But this is my first time running this particular adventure so be aware of that. I also haven’t DMed online in years so there may be growing pains the first couple of sessions as I remember how to use Roll20.

Haven’t heard of Eberron? Here are a couple one sentence descriptions pulled from an earlier reddit post to intrigue you: Industrialized magic meets noir-punk-pulp adventure on a continent recovering from 100 years of war, now with 100% more emancipated "magic robots" and halflings riding dinosaurs! Or... it's like Arcane in terms of magic technology but with a huge helping of post world war cold war paranoia. Or... it’s a wide magic setting with a technical bent built primarily around pulp action, noir intrigue, and cold war style espionage.

We’ll be using discord for planning and communication and Roll20 for maps. Games are on Saturdays starting at 9pm MST and plan to run for 1.5-2 hours.

This is a beginner friendly game and I would love to have mostly new players as I enjoy spreading the love for roleplaying, improv, and ttrpgs – but having one veteran player (role has been filled) to help guide the noobs would be great. The adventure is fairly linear and mission driven so some reviews have complained that it’s a bit railroady but I think there are plenty of places to homebrew in some mischief. And there is definitely ample opportunity for both roleplay, combat, and diplomacy. The choices you make will still influence the direction the story goes and how the NPCs remember you. That may or may not affect things for you in the future of the campaign.

I personally love character voices, though I don’t claim to be a savant or anything. Character voices/accents are highly encouraged for player characters as it helps me to tell when the character or player is talking. This is by no means a requirement, but something to note and think of. No one should ever feel silly for doing a character voice in DnD, even if it is a silly voice! Doing goofy voices and accents is hella fun once you let yourself have fun with it.

My DMing style tends to be a mixture of goofy and serious. I’m not super rules heavy but will be trying to keep this as Eberron lore accurate as possible. We’ll likely use a mix of 5e and 5.5e rules. I tend to go with the rule of cool and let players get away with shenanigans if they roleplay it well and make convincing meta arguments. But this adventure path is difficult and I won’t be pulling any punches with the encounters. Character death will be a real threat in this campaign, especially at earlier levels. That’s part of the risk of jumping into adventure as low level characters. Having stakes makes the game more fun in my opinion. It will be a good mix of combat and roleplay (shooting for 50/50 average over several sessions). Some might be roleplay heavy, some might be combat heavy.

The first session, this Saturday 5/16, is going to be a session 0.5. We’ll do an overview of Eberron and Sharn, discuss character ideas, and come up with how the party knows each other. Then everyone will start building out your characters and if we finish before the session is over, we’ll get into the first little bit of the story!

If you’re interested in playing: this is important. To filter out people I wouldn’t enjoy playing with, reading this full post and applying correctly is quite important to me. If you would like to join this campaign, please DM me and tell me three things:

  1. Why you like DnD and what your experience level is
  2. If you’ve ever heard of the Eberron campaign setting
  3. What species you would be leaning towards playing

If you don’t do those three things in your reply, you probably will not get a spot in the game. If you put in no effort at all, you probably won’t even get a reply, but I doubt those folks made it this far anyways. I put a lot of effort into my games, so I think it's fair of me to ask that you put a little effort into applying for the game.

I hope to adventure with four of you fine folks soon!
