Would you actually use a “smart” bandage? I’d like your honest opinion
Hi everyone,
I’m developing a student project called S-AIDE, a smart wound dressing designed to monitor wound-related changes and provide alerts when abnormal changes are detected.
The concept combines two parts:
Monitoring: parameters such as temperature
First-aid layer: an absorbent layer being explored for use with certain venomous/insect bites, including materials such as activated charcoal, with the goal of reducing exposure to certain toxins until professional medical care is available.
We’re also considering a simple, non-electronic patch, similar to an insect-bite/blister patch, that could be placed directly over a bite and would be much cheaper than the electronic version.
I’ve received some criticism that a smart bandage might be unnecessary because many changes can be noticed by the person themselves, while serious cases would normally be monitored by medical professionals. Others have raised concerns about waste, disposable electronics, sterilization, and cost.
So I’d like to test the idea honestly rather than assume people would want it.
- In which situation would you personally find this useful?
Normal cuts/wounds
Chronic wounds
Burns
Insect/venomous bites
Remote/outdoor situations
Post-surgery monitoring
I don’t see a useful application
- Would continuous monitoring of a wound provide value beyond simply looking at it yourself?
Definitely
Maybe
Not really
No
- Which feature would be most valuable to you?
Detecting abnormal temperature changes
Monitoring pH/wound conditions
Detecting swelling
Vital-sign monitoring
Alerts when something abnormal is detected
Active first-aid/absorbent layer for bites
None of these
- Would you be willing to use a reusable electronic module attached to a disposable wound-contacting patch?
Yes
Maybe, depending on price
No, I prefer a completely disposable bandage
No, I prefer a completely reusable product
- What would be an acceptable price for the disposable patch?
Under $1
$1–2
$2–5
More than $5
I wouldn’t pay extra for it
- What would you think about a simple, non-electronic version specifically for insect/venomous bites, similar to a bite patch?
Very useful
Potentially useful
Not sure
Not useful
- Who do you think should be the main user/customer of the smart version?
Patients
Doctors
Hospitals/clinics
Emergency/first-aid services
People in remote areas
Outdoor workers/hikers
Other
- What is your biggest concern about this concept?
Price
Waste/environmental impact
Accuracy of the sensors
Medical safety
Need for clinical evidence
Sterilization/hygiene
I don’t think it provides enough benefit
Other
- Would you trust a smart bandage to alert you that a wound may require medical attention?
Yes, as an early warning
Only if clinically validated
Maybe
No
- What would make you actually choose this product over a normal bandage?
Please give your honest opinion—even if you think the idea is unnecessary. Negative feedback is just as useful to us as positive feedback, because we’re trying to determine whether the concept solves a real problem.
Thank you.
