Had a lovely bucket list moment
Since I was a little kid I've loved Beethoven and finally, at age 66, got to see B9. I went with my daughter to Symphony Hall in Boston and watched the BSO do a really lively version of the Ninth (the first half was Adam's "Harmonium" which was terrific).
It was everything I could ask for and the audience was wonderful. I would guess the standing ovation went on for 15 minutes or more.
Things I learned from the live performance: The 3rd movement was transcendent and so moving in a way I haven't gleaned from recordings. Also, I'd always heard Beethoven elevated the role of trombones. Poor things have to sit and do nothing even longer than the chorus. I did not know that the contrabassoon is the pulse of the Turkish march.
