Overheard mom bitch about me

I was helping my mom tidy up after a family party. My aunt was there too. She needed to go and grab something from the shop but I said I’d do it and she said thank you. I went into my room quickly and then heard my mom and aunt bitch about me. I won’t explain the whole thing but the most hurtful things were my mom said members of my immediate family have had to “put up with me for years”. They also spoke about my mental health. I overheard my aunt say that for “someone so nervous, she’s surprisingly chatty.” My mom did refer to how my mental health makes life more difficult for me but everything was said in a really negative and contemptuous way.

When my mom saw I was still here her face dropped and she looked horrified.

I know I haven’t always been easy over the years, as a teen and young adult. I have struggled with my MH and emotional regulation. I’m not very organised and often left things until last minute which can be frustrating for people. However, I am a different person now and do not bring negativity to my mother’s life. I have worked really hard to manage my MH and emotions. I feel immense guilt about my downfalls and I have worked really hard to be the best version of myself.

I have often felt like a black sheep in my family. I have felt distance between my little sister and my dad and now I am worried that a picture has been painted of me thag I can’t escape from. There have been comments over the years said by family members that now kind of make sense. My aunt said “you are lucky to have him” speaking about my partner. My uncle said “you think you are better than everyone else”. I asked my mom at the time and she said they are just like that. Now I’m starting to think I have been spoken about.

I often feel like a burden anyway, it’s up and down but I’m working really hard. I feel like this has just taken me right back to square one. I think what hurts most is I see my mom as one of my best friends. I’ve moved in with her for a few months as I’m home for family commitments and now I’m unsure what to do. The way she spoke about me was like it was about someone she really doesn’t like.
