Night settled over the city without softening it. The towers burned through the haze like old machines refusing sleep. Down below the streets carried their endless current of people and engines and hunger. Light gathered in puddles stained with oil and rain and the signs flickered as though they were trying to remember another language.

The boy walked with his jacket open despite the cold. The seams had begun to split and the fabric caught the wind at every corner. Around him faces drifted past beneath borrowed eyes and polished chrome. Every stranger had traded something away. A hand. A memory. A voice that no longer sounded like the one they had been born with. The bargains had become so common no one thought to mourn them.

A train roared overhead. Its shadow crossed him for only a breath and then was gone.

He stopped before the cracked glass of a shuttered storefront. His reflection arrived in pieces between old bullet scars and fading advertisements. For a moment he looked like several different people trying to occupy the same body. He touched the screen in his pocket though there was no message waiting. Habit was another debt the city collected.

Somewhere nearby came the sound of laughter cut short. Then silence.

He turned toward it without quite knowing why.

The alley opened between two buildings where steam climbed from broken pipes and disappeared into the darkness above. A woman hurried past him with blood on one sleeve and never looked back. At the far end a vending machine still glowed beneath layers of grime, humming patiently to itself as though it alone believed tomorrow would resemble today.

The boy stood listening.

The city did not threaten. It did not promise. It simply continued.
