Alright-it's finally happening now-Bikeshare Everest Attempt at Twin Peaks starting today at 6 PM

Semi-live progress will be posted here: https://bs-on-bikeshare.com/

It's only 1.25 miles-between Cole Valley (MUNI Tunnel at Carl and Cole) and Twin Peaks up Clayton St. I'm aiming for roughly 22 minutes per interval and 56 intervals total. My hope is to finish well under 24 hours but we will see how it goes:

I may post some updates throughout the ride on my personal Instagram, otherwise most content will probably be next week: https://www.instagram.com/42apples/

Overheard at Bay Wheels...

I pulled in with my new classic Lyft Bike. A guy came up to me and asked: "Is that an e-bike?". I respond, "No, but there is one a block away." He said, "Yeah there's one around the corner but I’m too lazy to walk there so I’m just gonna Uber." He left, then 10 seconds later two guys dock e-bikes.

Reminds me of the story I overheard in college from a girl who got a flat tire, abandoned her bike, and never touched a bike again.

Bikeshare Everest Attempt October 2-3rd in Berkeley, Bullsh*t on Bikeshare Site

I posted a couple of months ago that I was hoping to do an Everest on a bikeshare bike. After some travel, some knee pain, some hesitation due to construction, and uncertainty due to nearby events (Cal Football games), I have finally had a decent training week last week and am ready to publicly announce my attempt starting Friday, October 2nd, riding out at 6 PM from Caffe Strada in Berkeley! My hope is to finish by October 3rd. Event is linked here and I will update with more details, including a fundraiser tied to the challenge. I would love to have folks come show up and make this a spectacle! Happy for any support, whether that is riding with me, coming to the start, filming or photos, helping me keep bottles filled, or cheering me on at any point along the way. I am honestly not 100% sure of myself but I don't think I will be in better shape in a better time of year for the rest of this year, so I am going to give it my all to finish. The weather should be nice if a little warm.

Here is my second half Everest that I just finished https://www.strava.com/activities/20262757879 , and a reel of this and some of the other rides I have done over the past few months: https://www.instagram.com/p/DduwYtZqrov/
The turnaround point is just past the bridge past the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden (any further and it would be too steep for my knees to handle that many repeats). My intention is to take fewer breaks than this, with only brief stops to refill water and only taking meal breaks every 6 hours.

As far as I know, no one has done an Everest on a bikeshare bike in North America. It has been done several times in Australia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCVIsd9D3wY . I have gone up hills on bikeshare bikes starting with my first time riding in Stockholm in 2014, and in the Bay Area since 2017. I've gone up Grizzly Peak, Hawk Hill, Twin Peaks, and a bunch of climbs around Berkeley. I wish there was a way to easily get more statistics by bike model, but I have 4,400 miles recorded on Strava on bikeshare bikes (almost all in the Bay Area, but this does also include a couple trips to Chicago, DC, New York, LA, and a day in Paris).

Thanks to u/Bacon_Waffles for helping me with the website and most of the photos https://bs-on-bikeshare.com/

The site is: Bullsh*t on Bikeshare: Chronicling Public Bike Adventures from the Practical to the Absurd. I intend to have it be part serious tips for using bikeshare, part wild adventures (Citibike Boys is an inspiration though I do not do stunts https://www.instagram.com/citybikeboys/?hl=enIf ), and part reviews of bikeshare (the Bay Area and beyond). If anyone is interested in helping maintain a website dedicated to bikeshare adventures, let me know-message or email at bsonbikeshare@gmail.com! Or if you have any of your own events you want chronicled or ideas to iterate on.

There should be a Citibike race around Central Park

I‘m back in the SF area but I spent a few days in NY a couple of weeks ago and had a lot of fun on a Citibike around both Central Park and Prospect Park. It would be cool to see a Citibike race. I guess closing the park would be a challenge and it would be hard to put everyone on equal footing with bike quality.

I use bikeshare a lot in SF too, hoping to Everest on a Lyft Bike. Never have gone that fast for 20 minutes here though.

Everresting on a Bay Wheels Bike Next Month

I’ve been a long time bikeshare user (since Ford GoBike in 2017). I’ve been a sucker for climbing hills on them and I got the crazy idea of doing my first Everest on one. As a test, I rode a half Everest solo-activity here https://strava.app.link/MOlKryNei5b

I haven’t really been on Reddit before. But wondering if anyone in this community would be interested in watching and/or filming or even riding a bit with me (could be on your own bike) My hope is to do a similar pace and take approximately 24, hopefully no more than 26 hours to do the whole thing.

I considered other climbs but this works well because it’s based at a cafe that is open 6 AM to midnight.
