How to start organising when material and political conditions are dire ?

As the question suggests : I work in an academic/grassroots capacity in Assam, and lately I’ve been strongly feeling like there seems to be no movement on the ground? People don’t seem to organise and trade unions to my knowledge are diluted and don’t function in the same way. Sorry if this question is very naive and silly but : how does anyone start?

Hello! Looking for suggestions on themes in Political and Legal anthropology for a syllabus

Hi all, PhD student in social anthropology here! I’m designing an independent study module with a prof on my committee and I need to create the syllabus before he can approve it. He’s recommended that I organise the syllabus under specific themes. His suggestions include : “endurance, refusal, defeat, aid, care, hope, anthropology of/as activism, etc”

Does anyone have any suggestions for other themes similar? I’m very new to the discipline as I came in from another discipline. Would really appreciate the help!

Cheers!

People doing grad school in the social sciences who use AI to read and write: why are you in grad school?

Genuinely curious as to why one would choose to pursue this really difficult and competitive and limited and underpaid field if one doesn’t like to read or write on their own.

Hijabi Abroad, But Not Here

Salam sisters, I (33F) am a revert and took up hijab last year. I live 9 months a year abroad where I have the fullest freedom to practice my faith, wear hijab, eat halal, what have you.

Three months I’m at home in a country that hates Muslims. My parents aren’t Muslim and they raise so many issues in such angry ways that I just don’t wear it here. It makes me feel very weak and sad.

Has anyone else had this happen? Did you ever manage to change familial minds?

Did anyone here exit an anthropology PhD?

As the title asks - did any of you stop halfway through an anthropology PhD? I started mine last year , and I don’t come from a previous anthropology background, but I was really excited about the fieldwork topic I had picked and was hoping to do something meaningful.

However, the more I read and study the discipline, the more uncomfortable I feel with the nature of the gaze, and I’m troubled about whether an ethical ethnography is even possible when one is studying a vulnerable population . Has anyone felt like this before? How do you cope?

Resources to learn Kashmiri as a non Kashmiri?

Hello lovely people! I am a non Kashmiri but am engaged to a Kashmiri and wanted to learn the language , at least the basics of speaking it colloquially . Do folks have any suggestions on how to do it? The internet is vast and confusing and I feel I’m making little progress. Thank you so much in advance !
