My phone died because I was too comfortable to walk twelve feet for a charger

I was sitting on the couch last night when my phone dropped to 1%.

My charger was plugged in beside my bed, maybe twelve feet away.

Instead of just getting up and grabbing it, I convinced myself the phone would survive long enough for me to find another solution. I turned the brightness all the way down, closed every app, switched on low power mode, turned off Bluetooth, and started watching the battery percentage like I was monitoring a medical emergency.

It went from 1% to 0%.

The phone stayed on for another few seconds, which gave me false hope.

Then it died.

At that point I finally got off the couch, walked to my bedroom, grabbed the charger, and came back.

I plugged it in and sat down.

Then I realized the cable was too short to reach the couch comfortably.

So I had to get up again and move the entire couch closer to the outlet.

I spent more energy avoiding a twelve foot walk than the twelve foot walk would have taken.

Apparently Looking Confused Means I Work Here

I was at a hardware store looking for a replacement cabinet hinge. I was wearing jeans, a gray hoodie, and a baseball cap. Nothing from the store.

A guy walked up and asked where the cabinet hinges were.

I told him I didn't know because I didn't work there.

He looked at the broken hinge in my basket and said, But you obviously know what you're looking for.

I explained that I was actually trying to figure that out myself.

He walked away, then came back a few minutes later with his friend and a cabinet door.

He pointed at me and said, This is the guy I was talking about.

I told them again that I didn't work there.

His friend apologized, but the first guy asked if I could at least tell him which hinge would fit.

Before I could answer, an actual employee walked over.

The customer immediately complained that I had refused to help him.

The employee looked at me, then at the customer, and said, He doesn't work here.

The guy just stood there for a second.

Then he turned around, looked directly at the shelf behind me, and realized the hinges had been sitting there the entire time.

He grabbed one and left without saying anything.

The employee looked at me and said, You did a pretty convincing job of looking like you work here.

I told him I was just confused about cabinet hinges.

Apparently, that was enough to get mistaken for staff.
