Need genuine advice: Thar RWD Diesel Manual or Grand Vitara Zeta Automatic?

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to buy a new car soon and I’m genuinely confused between the Mahindra Thar RWD Diesel Manual and the Maruti Grand Vitara Zeta Automatic.
I know these are two completely different vehicles, which is exactly why I’m struggling to decide.
I’ve always loved the Thar. Its design, road presence, and overall character make it feel special every time I see one. It’s a car I’ve wanted for a long time. However, I also know it comes with compromises like rear-seat comfort, boot space, ride quality, and everyday practicality.
On the other hand, the Grand Vitara seems like the sensible choice. It offers an automatic transmission, much better fuel efficiency, more features, a comfortable ride, and is clearly more practical for daily driving and family use.
My biggest concern is regret.
I’m worried that if I buy the Grand Vitara, I’ll always look at a Thar and feel like I gave up on the car I really wanted. But I’m equally worried that if I buy the Thar, I might start missing the comfort and practicality after living with it every day.
I’ve also noticed that the Thar receives a lot of criticism online. Some people criticize the vehicle itself, while others seem to dislike the image created by a section of Thar owners. I want to understand how much of the hate is actually about the vehicle and how much is just because of its reputation.
So I’d really appreciate honest opinions from people who have:
Owned or driven a Thar.
Owned or driven a Grand Vitara.
Considered one of these cars but chose the other.
Regretted buying their dream car or regretted choosing the practical option instead.
Please don’t just comment “Thar” or “Grand Vitara.” I’d really like to know why you would choose one over the other and whether you think I’ll regret either decision in the long run.
Thanks in advance!
