Wet lab mol. bio. vs computational structural biology
I completed biology BSc (focused on molecular biology and cell culturing) and bioinformatics MSc (with a structural+ML thesis project).
Right now I have roughly two available PhD positions:
wet lab
A well established senior PI, good funding for research materials but also a competitive salary (roughly twice the university doctoral school stipend and slightly above the median salary in the nation). Project involves creating cell culture models of rare genetic diseases, transcriptomic data analysis and confocal microscopy. The computational part is likely to be almost completely based on standardized pipelines and plays a supporting role in the project.comp. biophysics
My MSc supervisor, not as well established lab but with good track record of publications. Focus is on MD simulations, particularly on transmembrane transporters. Only wet lab work is done by collaborators at other institutions. Funding would be much lower (doctoral school stipend + possible bonuses from grants, overall around half of the previous position's).
I know both PIs, and both are great scientist and likely the least toxic ones I know, both know me personally.
1st position really stands out funding wise, and I enjoy the type of wet lab that I'd do there. Though I might miss more extensive computational work, and I worry I'd fall out of the computational field, i.e. would not be worth it to focus on computations full time after that PhD, because I'd be behind compared to specialists.
2nd position is paid as poorly as any other typical PhD position. I always liked high resolution explanations of molecular mechanisms based on chemistry and physics, so whatever I'd keep doing at this lab is bound to be interesting to me. Though from what I know about the field, it's hard getting an academic position later on regardless of the field, and structural comp. bio. is in lower demand compared to omics. I also know bioinformaticians can end up being a support-scientist, where your job is to provide services (analysis, data storage, creating figures), in which case you end up as more of a super-technician, than a researcher.
Ideally I'd like to find a way to stay in both novel computations and wet lab molecular biology with focus on molecular mechanisms, though I don't think it's plausible to do that and don't loose to specialists in the end. Of course I know exceptions, but they're just that, and I'd rather specialize in something, and have a chance at working in the field, rather than end up with a conversation-starter PhD.
Of course I can also search for other positions, but these two are imo the best ones available right now. This is in EU.
Dzwoni więc do hydraulika. To połowa mojej wypłaty".
Mógłbyś zmienić zawód i potroić swoje zarobki.
Profesor przyjmuje ofertę, zostaje hydraulikiem i potraja swoje zarobki.
Wychodzi mu -πr². Niestety znowu wychodzi dokładnie to samo, gapi się w tablicę zmieszany, a wtedy z tyłu sali ktoś krzyczy "Zamień granice całkowania!"
