Did I get scammed into buying McAfee and is my computer okay?

I think I got scammed but I'd like to know for sure.

So today I was cleaning out my Chrome bookmarks and I clicked on an old website that I bookmarked maybe 4-5 years ago. Instead of pulling up the website I watched the link in the URL/search bar redirect like 4 times. Then I got a pop-up (looked like an Apple system notification, not a Chrome notification, which is why I foolishly trusted it) that said something like "Trojan" "You have just visited websites with virus" "5 virus detected" "run McAfee to protect your computer."

I completely panicked. It said "McAfee expired [yesterday]" even though I've never had McAfee. I immediately assumed it was something that I was supposed to have, so I bought the cheapest McAfee plan from their website and downloaded the installer. The installer refuses to install (says "Internet not available" even though I'm connected to internet).

After some Googling I downloaded Malwarebytes, which is free, and I ran a scan of my computer, and it said zero threats detected. So I guess that's crisis mitigated? But I still have this McAfee thing on my computer that I paid $60 for in a moment of panic and it's not even installing. I'm looking into a refund right now but I'd like to know what the hell happened. No calling me an idiot please. I already know it was a stupid thing to do.

Has anyone taken HSTY1003?

I am talking about the June-July intensive "Birth of the Present: The World Since 1750"

Has anybody taken this and how was the experience?
