MLB Players Suspended for Domestic Violence Fallout & Reaction

I have thought a lot about this and am curious on others thoughts. Since baseball implemented their 2015 domestic violence program, there have been 19 suspensions by 18 players with Julio Urias being suspended twice. It feels the reaction to different players has varied widely. Some, such as Trevor Bauer have been blackballed (rightfully so IMO) immediately when they were suspended. Others, came back and have moved between teams with almost no mention of the past DV issues, like Aroldis Chapman and Marcell Ozuna. Others have come back briefly and then been out of the league, like Roberto Osuna and Addison Russell.

The response to teams and DV offenders seems to be just as mixed. The Astros were excoriated for trading for Roberto Osuna, again, rightfully so. Chapman has been on 6 teams (Yankees, Cubs, Royals, Rangers, Pirates, Red Sox) since and was traded within 3 months of his 30 game suspension ending. I’m not aware of any level of criticism levied towards any of those teams for signing or trading for Aroldis Chapman. The signing of Marcell Ozuna by the Pirates this past offseason was positively covered as the Pirates actually spending money and trying to contend.

All this to say, why has fan reaction and media coverage been so drastically different when it comes to players connected to domestic violence?
