What I Learned Shadowing and Volunteering in Healthcare as a High Schooler

Everyone tells you to shadow a doctor if you're thinking about medicine. What they don't really explain is what you're actually supposed to get out of it. I've spent the last few months volunteering and shadowing at ChristianaCare, and the experience taught me a lot more than I expected going in.

The Jobs Nobody Talks About

My first placement was in the physical therapy center. It's a big room, full of machines and massage beds, and my job was to clean everything a patient touched during their session. It sounds small, almost boring, but standing in that room for hours made me realize how much of healthcare runs on things nobody notices. Nobody thanks the person who wiped down the equipment. But if that job doesn't get done, the whole place stops functioning safely.

My second placement was the ambulatory infusion center. It's a smaller room with about 15 big reclining chairs, each one hooked up to an IV. My job there was different, more about the patients directly. I'd offer them a pillow, a blanket, something to eat or drink, and then clean the chair once they left. These are patients sitting for hours getting treatment, and something as simple as bringing someone a blanket actually mattered to them. It wasn't medical care in any technical sense, but it was still care. That distinction stuck with me.

The ER Was a Different World Entirely

The shadowing part happened in a trauma ER, and it was nothing like the other two placements. I was shadowing a respiratory therapist, and we went room to room doing rounds. Almost every patient was unconscious, heavily medicated because of how severe their injuries were. A lot of them were from vehicle accidents. It was a genuinely gruesome sight, worse than I expected even having prepared myself for it mentally.

I also got to witness a thoracic surgery while I was there, which was one of the most interesting things I've ever watched. Seeing the actual mechanics of what a surgical team does, how coordinated and precise everyone has to be, made the idea of medicine feel a lot more real than any classroom description ever could.

What Actually Changed for Me

Going into this, I think I had a pretty flattened idea of what healthcare work looks like. Doctors do the important stuff, everyone else supports them. Being in these three completely different environments broke that idea apart pretty fast. Cleaning a physical therapy room, handing someone a blanket in an infusion chair, and standing next to a respiratory therapist during trauma rounds are three completely different jobs, but they're all genuinely necessary, and none of them felt like busywork once I was actually doing them.

The ER specifically forced me to sit with something uncomfortable. Watching unconscious trauma patients, mostly from car accidents, isn't something you can really prepare for by reading about it. It's heavy. But it also clarified something for me: this is the actual weight of the work, not the sanitized version you get from TV or from talking about medicine in the abstract. If I'm going to commit to a path in medicine, I wanted to know what the hardest parts of it actually feel like, not just the parts that sound good on paper.

Either way, you learn something you can't get anywhere else, and you learn it a lot earlier than most people do, which matters when you're about to make a years-long commitment based on it.
