Told Family - Catching Hell for Not Trying to Commission

Paused my bachelor's degree and decided to enlist as a CTI to escape the burnout of full-time work and full-time asynchronous college.

Most friends and family when I told them were upset but supportive. Had a handful get very very angry at me for not finishing my cybersecurity degree and applying for commission instead. One person literally said "If you're going to ruin your life at least sell your ass for a better price."

I was feeling pretty damn good about getting CTI. But now I'm questioning my choices.

Anyone else get shamed for not trying to commission because the enlisted job was more appealing?

This feels like a variation of the "go AF, they have a better QoL" I've been hearing for months without any regard for my situation or preferences.

Contracted for CTI But Never Took the DLAB?

Hello everyone! I recently got my CTI contract and my ship date with the Navy. My ASVAB was a 95 and my recruiter explained that my line scores alpha qualified me for CTI (VE + MK ≥ 126 and I managed 127).

I asked my recruiter to schedule the DLAB just to make sure, and he said no. I didn't need it. I later spoke to his chief on a different call and requested it again (I wanted it for my own peace of mind at this point) arguing i didn't want a lack of score to limit my language options, and once again was told no, I don't need it.

So I have CTI but no DLAB score.

  1. How screwed am I? Am I at risk of getting rerated if I fail the DLAB later?
  2. Will I get to take it later for language placement? Will it matter at all?
  3. Am I by default going to get Spanish because of my lack of DLAB score on my file?

Thank you for your time and I appreciate any and all advice! I

PS: If this is a commonly asked question, I sincerely apologize.

LRP & the Enlistment Process

Hello everyone! I am in the process of enlisting with the Navy and am planning to contract sometime next week once some of my paperwork goes through.

I am looking to set up LRP (yes I've considered the GI Bill, but this makes sense for me and my situation).

I am aware I need to get statements of a certain type for each loan (thankfully they're all federal loans currently through one servicer: Mohela) and submit a "DOD EDUCATIONAL LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM (LRP) ANNUAL APPLICATION" along with the aforementioned statements.

  1. When in the process do I need this stuff completed?

1.1) Does it need to be completed prior to my contract or ship? Or a different time entirely? I've heard different things from different people.

  1. What is the most common mistake or misunderstanding of LRP?

  2. I am aware the payments are considered taxable income and will impact my taxes. Can someone please explain this in detail? How best should I plan around this?

  3. Any general advice or best practices as someone using LRP for someone new to all of this?

Thank you in advance and have a wonderful day!
