What are your thoughts on the audio quality/recording/sound file quality of the DLPT vs the Assessment Objects vs GLOSS in your personal experience?

Been walking through the GLOSS level 1 stuff w/ a tutor

Audio quality of the sound files in GLOSS is kind of meh, slightly grainy, wondering if its like that during the actual DLPT exam? Haven't taken the DLPT before, thinking of taking it next feb-march before I apply to a program around then.

Is the DLI competitive

Currently a third year in college, majoring in Economics and Political Science. I have an interest in joining a military branch after college, to be determined.

I wanted to know how competitive it is to get into the DLI. I am interested in learning Chinese to serve our country and to get to know my culture and language more deeply [I am ethnically Chinese]. I understand basic grammar concepts, some words, and can distinguish between the 4 tones.

Bottom line, how competitive is it to join the DLI and since I understand a bit of Chinese will it be easier for me?

DLI school path

From what I’ve seen this seems unrealistic, but want to double check.

For context: soon to graduate with a chemical engineering bachelors.

Want to join and go to DLI school and learn mandarin or Korean. Would it be possible to get a 3, maybe 4 year contract, and get paid the same as an officer / be in an officer position? Plan to get a masters after my service.

If not, any other routes to learn a language while in military (will they fund online language classes or something) or go to DLI school in another way?

Bible study/church recommendations

Anyone currently or recently at DLI have good church or Bible study recommendations? I'm looking for a place or group that is very Bible-based but without being too big box church flashy, and a sense of community, especially among young adults. I've tried Grace Church so far and didn't love it (the predestination teachings were strange), went to some Catholic churches (I'm formerly Catholic but don't find myself aligned with some of their practices), and I've heard some not-so-great things about Shoreline, so I'm hoping for some other options.

Thank you!

For you personally, how long did it take after finishing your DLAB to obtain your score? What about for your DLPT?

Planning when to sign up to take the test for a program gonna apply to around March-April 2027 next year

Just trying to get a rough sense of the time in between finishing the test and getting your official score

Don't know anyone on my base who has taken it

What're the chances I get spanish?

I heard that it was extremely oversaturated but I was a Linguistic Anthropology major with a focus on Spanish (not fluent, only a couple of years of college) and I am deeply interested in the language, whereas I have little to no interest in languages like arabic or farsi. I've heard a lot of different things on here and I'm kinda scared to get stuck with a language I'll hate for several years

Is there somewhere to see a complete list of languages available for DLPT's?

I saw a couple different lists online and was wondering which one is the most current. Wanted to see what there was and if Afrikaans is on there. Curious for Navy if there's any distinction between branches.

Contracted for CTI But Never Took the DLAB?

Hello everyone! I recently got my CTI contract and my ship date with the Navy. My ASVAB was a 95 and my recruiter explained that my line scores alpha qualified me for CTI (VE + MK ≥ 126 and I managed 127).

I asked my recruiter to schedule the DLAB just to make sure, and he said no. I didn't need it. I later spoke to his chief on a different call and requested it again (I wanted it for my own peace of mind at this point) arguing i didn't want a lack of score to limit my language options, and once again was told no, I don't need it.

So I have CTI but no DLAB score.

  1. How screwed am I? Am I at risk of getting rerated if I fail the DLAB later?
  2. Will I get to take it later for language placement? Will it matter at all?
  3. Am I by default going to get Spanish because of my lack of DLAB score on my file?

Thank you for your time and I appreciate any and all advice! I

PS: If this is a commonly asked question, I sincerely apologize.

Taking DLPT for Chinese in a few weeks

Hi everyone, I am going to take DLPT in Chinese in a few weeks for a job position that asks for ILR 3 or above. It's a computer adaptive, all ranges test with multiple-choice questions. I am a native Chinese speaker so the reading and listening contents are not the issue. The difficult part for me is the MC questions and answers that presented in English. I wonder whether I can study English glossary or do some preparation beforehand? Also, I found a practice demo in UMD website. However, they only have constructed response(CRT) questions for level 3+ and 4, not multiple-choice. Does anyone have resources for this test or any advice? Please share. Many thanks!

Failed the DLAB

Failed the DLAB :( way harder than I thought it was going to be. I ended up getting an 80. Not really sure how that compares to average test takers. But I know the minimum is 110 and for placement is usually 120 ish. It was formatted differently than a lot of the online study guides mentioned. It must have gotten a revamp fairly recently. I wish they did that test in a separate room. My test proctors were sooooo annoyingly loud.

update on my class! (almost at week 3)

I was sat down in class with my teaching team lead and they said something about my performance in class, their accent is really hard to understand so I nodded my way through it. my class leader said that looking at the outside wildlife/chinese youtube shorts isn't helpful as i think it is for my mental health or chinese ability, according to him. anways, I finished Attack on Titan a little while before I picked up class, I really liked it and it made me feel more confident with my level now in chinese. Does anyone have any recommandations on other good chinese cartoons?

I think the Squirrels outside my schoolhouse speak chinese

I started learning Chinese (week 2) and I've already fallen in love with the Chinese culture and other stuff. During listening class, I was looking into chinese mythology and found out that chinese squirrles/rodents are also said (in mythology) to speak chinese, similar to fujian accented chinese. I didn't pay too much heed to this at first, but I realized that the squirrels use tones in their squeaking. I listened closer and realized theres 5 different tones, kind of like in chinese. btw, for reference I am in the US Army. could I be onto something here? is this kind of content going to be on the dlpt? My classmates keep telling me to pay attention in class but I was told by my friends in class to chase your interests in the language. I feel really torn apart about this and want to score well on the DLPT. What should i do?

Air Force Reserves: Gap year at DLI or MA and quick Tech School.

Hello everyone, I am currently finishing up my undergraduate degree in History with a minor in Russian, graduating in Spring 2027. I have a background of four years active duty in the Army and two years in the Army Reserves, and I am currently in the process of transferring to the Air Force Reserves. Because my Army MOS is not transferable, I will need to attend Tech School after graduation. My long-term goal is to work as an analyst in the Intelligence Community (IC) and potentially pursue diplomacy, and I plan on getting an MA in International Relations/National Security. However, I am facing a dilemma regarding my Air Force job selection and timeline. I know the IC heavily values language skills, and I am open to any language the USAF gives me, but the training pipeline is long. Should I try to become an Air Force Linguist and take a necessary gap year for the training, or would it be smarter to choose a different job with a shorter Tech School so I can start my Master’s degree sooner? Ultimately, I would love to know if the intense language skills gained at DLI carry more weight in the IC than getting an MA a year or two earlier. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Warning about the medical system

If you are going to DLI soon be prepared to have difficulties with the clinic staff. They quite frankly suck, they will invalidate you any chance you get and refuse to get to the root cause of more serious medical issues. If you're not careful they'll also put false information in your medical record to make your health issues look less serious. If you want to be taken seriously, message them about issues in MHS Genesis when you can so it leaves a paper trail, if they refuse care and tell you it's nothing ask them to write on your record exactly why they are refusing care, check your medical record in MHS Genesis regularly to make sure they didn't screw it up, and if they did screw it up make an appointment to get it changed or try to find the Patient Administration Office to get it changed. Don't let them screw you over.
