Guardian Starting Issue

Hey all - have a Guardian (044563) circa 2009 and it’s been super reliable over the years. Had an oil leak fixed several years ago but other than that just regular battery replacements.

Anyway, went out to manually run it, and where it would normally start, it just made a loud pop/bang. Loud enough that my wife heard it inside the house. I mean it was like a gun shot. It could’ve been a backfire I suppose (runs on propane), but I’ve never stood that close to a backfire to make a good comparison.

After that I waited a few minutes, inspected what I could, fuses, etc. and tried again. This time no bang, but just a low irregular buzzing sound from beneath the panel where the circuit breaker is located (on the right side of the generator when opened).

I have no issue calling someone in to check it out but wanted to see if anyone here goes “oh it’s this for sure” or not before I do that.

Thx!

EDIT… SOLVED: Side of the battery blew out. It wasn’t obvious because it was the backside, and the wetness around the battery was mistaken for rainwater (storm had just come thru).

Receiving Shipments

Hey all - is it acceptable to receive packages via UPS or FedEx to the dorms? I know USPS is allowed but I just don’t trust them as much with more expensive items.

I’ve heard/read it’s USPS only but I thought that was just for overseas.

What is this one?

I’ve been racking my brain for months, maybe even on and off for years. I simply cannot remember any more than this:

  1. Female singer (but could have multiple people, maybe even guys doing background vocals).
  2. I’m thinking 70s or 80s soft rock/pop.
  3. Since I was a kid when this got airplay, speakers were shit and all I’d hear (at least recall) are largely the melodies, however the chorus sounded like “So far I knewwww… gonna be room for anything to happen…”.
  4. I also seem to recall hearing “gonna be” or “gonna be it” being sung in the background repeatedly between those two lines above in #3.

I wish I knew more. A couple of songs that remind me of the overall vibe and time period are Baby, Come to Me by Patti Austin and James Ingram… as well as Never Gonna Let You Go by Sergio Mendes (w/ Leeza Miller).

Crater Face in 90210

Look who I spotted in S1 of BH 90210. Scott Fults plays a pretty heavy role in this one episode at least compared to what he did in SBTB.

Movies That Miscast The Younger Versions Of Adults

I find it beyond annoying when movies, especially big budget movies, fail at depicting the younger versions of adults (eg. flashbacks or establishing scenes or whatever). Some are close, many are way off.

I just watched Masters of the Universe and young Adam is white and blonde. I guess those were the only two boxes to check. The young version even had a prominent mole on his neck that the adult version did not. Things like that seem easy to fix anyway in post production. If continuity is important, seems they’d fix stuff like that.

There have been tons over the years that I’ve seen and I can’t recall them all, but I mean some where the adult has brown eyes and the kid has blue eyes. Come the hell on. I remember Tom Hardy being young Patrick Stewart in Star Trek… fail. John Cusack looks nothing like Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys but played him in Love & Mercy. Btw I love all those guys, they’re great actors, it’s not a knock on them, just casting.

Totally get the alternative eventually could be some corny AI young version of someone which might be worse… but, it’s so distracting and seems more avoidable.

What are others?

One song you’d want to hear Brain do that he hasn’t already

For me I’d kill to hear his take on Lee Van Cleef. His hi hat work and cymbal grabs are stellar.

Help Finding a Location

I believe it to be Huntsville and naturally have checked all around Monte Sano on Google Earth to no avail. I was even there in person last year and tried to match the spot from the main area around the lodge, but no dice. I know there are mountains all around there, but hoping someone recognizes this background.

Couple things to note - I’m not convinced that the lighter lines in the background are roads, but instead could be smoke/steam from buildings rising into the air. Also, positioned near the bottom of the pic (sort of off center and closer to the camera), looks like a roof/chimney or even a steeple-type of structure.

Thanks so much in advance. The pic is circa 1973-74.

What are some awesomely horrible TV show spinoff concepts that never happened?

To be clear - these are TV shows (and I figure movies are ok too) that were never made, but would be hilarious if they were.

I’ll start… after Saved By The Bell wraps, the show continues as “Saved By The Bell: The Parents”. The show would follow the lives of the main cast member’s parents, not the kids AS parents.

For example, Derek Morris (Zack’s dad) comes home from work one day, wife Melanie (Zack’s mom) coaxes him into cutting the grass before it rains. It rains anyway and he is nearly struck by lightning, injured when falling. Gets rushed to the hospital where he is tended to by Dr. Judy Turtle (Lisa’s mom). While laid up in the hospital, Derek happens upon Frank Kapowski (Kelly’s dad) who is serving as a janitor after falling in hard times. Etc, etc.

Another one - Prison Break ‘61. This show chronicles the upbringing of Brad Bellick, who was the main prison guard in the series. The show explores how Brad came to be such a jerk, while remaining a mama’s boy. Etc, etc.

What you got?

Most gravitate towards the main theme, or Crockett’s Theme (which is amazing), but there’s something about Hammer’s music and this show that just hits differently. It captures that era perfectly, and somehow he manages to make tropical/latin 80s tracks sound ominous. That seems like an awfully small needle to thread. When you think of Miami, sun, the beach, beautiful people, etc… it’s an odd combo to keep that vibe AND overlay the feeling of impending doom. Some examples:

From the episode Glades, one of my fave episodes and fave tunes: https://youtu.be/sCivANsz8L8?si=GD4hWIZsleK6VSIV

From Heart of Darkness, early episodes (and sometimes later thru the series), you’d hear some version of this: https://youtu.be/PwsMDcA7Qcw?si=0nHdUacZGHA6eUPu

I could go on and on. He also crushed it on the more action-focused and lighthearted songs, I just really love how he crafted the moodier ones.

What are your favorite darker tracks?

Listen to it once past the intro. Def some similarity (not accusing anyone of plagiarism here, just an interesting find).

Starbuck is an old loungey yacht rock band from the 70s. Tons of catchy stuff check them out.
