Slater mooned a teacher on first day at a new school
And all he got was detention?
And all he got was detention?
This is cool. Never saw this before.
The Saved by the Bell reboot didn't fail because it was modern. It failed because it seemed embarrassed by the very show it was reviving. Instead of building on the growth established in The College Years and Wedding in Las Vegas, it reduced many of the original characters to exaggerated caricatures of their 1991 selves. The entire production felt trapped in a meta joke, less interested in continuing the story than in commenting on it. Tracey Wigfield publicly framed Zack Morris as the guy who tried to get Kelly to quit medical school, seemingly overlooking the fact that in The College Years he ultimately encouraged her to return to medicine after she left school to work at Skeeter's -- basically Hooters. That arc was literally about Zack supporting Kelly's ambitions. Even more baffling was how Kelly herself was written. The sharp, mature young woman that Tiffani Thiessen spoke proudly about during 1993 College Years press was replaced by someone often portrayed as ditzy, airheaded, and reduced to jokes about having sex with Zack in a car. It felt less like character evolution and more like regression.
The handling of Dustin Diamond was equally disappointing. Whatever tensions existed, it is difficult to understand why nobody could arrange a sit-down conversation. Just two years earlier, Mark-Paul Gosselaar had spent time with Dustin at Steel City Con, and Mario Lopez had welcomed him onto his nationally syndicated talk show. Yet the reboot proceeded as if meaningful outreach was impossible. Meanwhile, I spent days compiling a detailed reference guide for the writers, documenting major and minor Saved by the Bell cast members, their histories, and even contact information where available. It was ignored. The message seemed clear: continuity and legacy were not priorities.
The biggest problem was philosophical. Zack Morris was no longer the guy fans watched mature through Cal U and Las Vegas. He became a plastic parody of his younger self, seemingly filtered through internet memes rather than the actual series. Hiring the creator behind the "Zack Morris Is Trash" videos to write for the reboot only reinforced the feeling that the creative team viewed the original show as something to mock rather than understand. Did anyone sit Mark-Paul or the writers down with College Years tapes? Did anyone revisit Wedding in Las Vegas? Because the character on screen bore little resemblance to the more mature Zack those projects established.
The focus on the next generation didn't help either. Fans waited decades to reconnect with Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa, and Screech. Instead, the original cast often felt like supporting players in their own revival. A two-hour reunion movie or a limited series centered on the characters audiences actually grew up with, supplemented by thoughtful cameos, would have served the franchise far better. Even Lisa's eventual inclusion felt reactionary, arriving only after Lark Voorhies publicly discussed her exclusion and emotional struggles on Dr. Phil. The reboot had moments of talent and occasional cleverness, but at its core it never seemed interested in celebrating Saved by the Bell. It wanted to deconstruct it, parody it, and apologize for it. For fans who loved the original heart of the franchise, that was the fatal mistake.
Cheers Season 4 Episode 8
Norm's neighbor tells him that she suspects that Vera is having an affair with her husband, a private investigator (Ernie Sabella) gets to the bottom of it.
Really cool to see such rare footage.
I didn't. I tried a few episodes and while the original was goofy, it at least has a certain sincerity to it. The reboot's tone was ironic and at times mean-spirited. Not only towards the original, the Selena Gomez joke was also tonally deaf. It feels like it was made to apologize and bash on the original. (Which doesn't surprise me, having listened to Zack to the Future).
To me it feels like they used the brand as a crutch, like the show wouldn't be greenlit without the SBTB association. And even with it, it didn't last long. Heck, it lasted only one episode longer than the College Years. (And if you count Wedding in Las Vegas as part of the College years, it's shorter.
And that reboot theme was just bad. They should have just used the Jimmy Fallon/the Roots version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igfxUyCz36E&pp=ygUZZmFsbG9uIHNhdmVkIGJ5IHRoZSBiZWxsIA%3D%3D (with an edit of course)
To be fair, updating a cartoony, wacky show like SBTB would be a hard task. The only update I would think of, is the gang somehow working at a company and getting into hijinks, with some more adult oriented humor. Think Friends X the Office in a way.
It feels weird to see College Years Zack and Kelly at TNC set.
I always laugh that Slater chooses the sit-in over going to Lake Tahoe. Then Zack’s speech talking to the chancellor’s assistant towards the end was cringe worthy.
I love the Big Bopper, but his standup isn't one of his stronger skills.
I'm currently watching the Samsung Plus SBTB channel, and it's one of the three "clip shows" from senior year. This is the one where Zack takes a sick day to rest, and Slater/Lisa/Screech come over to reminisce about the summer, particularly the time working at Malibu Sands.
Slater just commented that he got "Over $500 in tips." Now I'm thinking, wait a minute, wasn't Slater a lifeguard at the club? Would a lifeguard normally earn tips? I'm genuinely asking, maybe this is a real thing and I've just never heard of it.
I should add that, even if the writers screwed up on this line, I get that the show isn't meant to be super realistic. I still love the show anyway, as corny as it is. (I have to throw in that part because I got my ass handed to me a few months ago on this sub when I dared to comment that it was a little weird that Mr. Belding was so often teaching classes on the show.)
Did anyone watch the Saved By The Bell spin-off? I know the show exists, and it got cancelled after one season. I'm just curious about people's thoughts on the show. What did you think of the show?
Even growing up and watching as a kid, I always thought Jessie was the best character and my favorite. I was always wondering why did Kelly and Lisa care about prom and fashion so much? Jessie did school right. Was she a bit neurotic and over the top? Yes, but I am too. And was back then. I even got addicted to uppers like Jessie! As an adult, she’s still my favorite. Zack Morris is trash and AC Slater is a misogynistic pig. And Screech would be placed on a sex offender list (Zack too) if he pulled any of his crap in today’s world.
Man, just thinking about him stepping in the octagon for a rematch with Nedick would have been awesome.
