Just caught this beautiful male Selysiothemis nigra (Black Pennant) resting on a dry branch right as the sun was setting. The golden light hitting her dark, elegant body was absolutely stunning.

These dragonflies are relatively rare in Europe and have a very distinctive look — almost completely black with a slight metallic sheen, slender body, and long wings. Seeing one perfectly silhouetted against a warm sunset sky felt like a little nature reward after a long day.

Anyone else lucky enough to spot this species? I'd love to see your shots!

Where I live, dragonflies can be spotted as late as early December. It makes for some wonderful and unusual scenes like this: a dragonfly resting on dry autumn leaves."
