Odds of getting promoted?

I work for an engineering firm that is pretty large and provides full service engineering services for the utility industry. We have 600-800 employees and there are 6 of us that are contracted (we call it a seconded role) to the local huge utility. The previous RD didn’t see how our work was relevant to our jobs and promotions at the main company. The new rd does. I was promoted from engineer 2 to assistant pm to pm in 2 years becuase I’ve proven I have the experience it just wasn’t seen day to day by the higher ups. So I’ve been a pm technically for 1.5 years. My company just posted a pm2 job that requires 5 years of experience. Technically I have 8 in the field and 5 managing projects 3 of those were not pm title.

I’m going to Forsure request it with paperwork showing my projects the past years and everything. But I’m skeptical of a 3rd promotion in 3 years.

Are companies actually using ai to filter resumes then trash them?

I find it hard to believe that many companies use ai to filter resumes and just throw out the ones ai doesn’t think fit.

I know my company does not do this were small/medium sized about 750 employees. Does everyone just assume this because they don’t hear back? Or are majority of companies actually doing this?

Everyone calm down about follow ups

I see tons of questions about follow ups for whatever reason. Whether it’s an offer that you signed and haven’t heard back or a recruiter “ghosting” you after a few days of no response.

Take a beat. HR and hiring managers are busy people. This may be the most important thing in your life but I promise you it’s low on their totem pole. You contacting anyone two or three times before they have an answer is just annoying.

If they want you they will contact you. I sincerely believe there is not a single recruiter waiting for you to call or email them before giving you an offer or another interview. Sure if they say “we’re offering you a job I’ll send you the offer next week” and it’s been 2 weeks yeah 100% follow up.

100% send that email after a interview thanking them for the interview and reminding them why you fit the role.

But anything more is just annoying to be honest.

What happened to this thread!?

What happened to this thread. When I joined it was smart people talking pm subjects and discussing things.

Now it’s purely questions of how do i pass this new exam as easy/quick as possible. There are so many people that just want everything spoon fed to them that they can’t scroll for even 30 seconds to find the many posts that answer their questions.

Anytime you give any feedback other then “you go girl your the best ever “ your a bad guy. I’ll be the first to admit I’ve given some snippy and smart arse responses. But it’s all because the questions just keep getting dumber and dumber and i personally see this as directly devaluing the pmp cert.

The people that have no business getting the pmp keep getting it thinking it’s this magic cheat code. In reality the pmp is not actually a career maker. It should be treated as an experience confirmation. With no experience the pmp means literally nothing. With 7+ yrs the pmp holds some weight.

I’m not sure this will ever make any impact on anyone but please stop posting the same questions!

  1. How do I prep
  2. What should I study
  3. I’m starting to prep, what course and such should I do.

Just please take 30 seconds and do a little something for yourself.

Job description details

For all the people that are applying and getting rejected fr hundreds of jobs every month.

Do you just sit there and mass apply with a set resume or 2/3? Or are uu actually taking time to read descriptions and if it’s not a ft you don’t apply?

I see so many posts of “I applied for xxx jobs this month and got 0 call backs”.

Is it your just applying for the wrong jobs that have nothing to do with your experience or your applying for jobs with 90% match and still getting denied?

PMO management rqmts

So I’m a 7+ year pm in the utility industry. I have managed project up to $8mil not crazy high but also not small budgets.

I am essentially in an informal PMO at the moment. I have my pmp(doesn’t mean a ton) but adding to my yoe it doesn’t hurt.

How would I go from my position now to a formal pmo management position? I understand this is likely a 5-10 yr goal but any suggestions are great!

I talked with my manager last week on what it’s going to take for me to manage a formal program ($10-$100mil a year) and he essentially told me I’m ready just need the company to establish a new program or have one of those senior pms leave. He can’t just create one out of thin air.

Would there be a point for me to take FE?

Im 15 years out of school and never got my FE. I’m in oil and gas so PE is very important. I am a pm now though so on my track I won’t ever be stamping drawings and haven’t really done detailed engineering in years. I wouldn’t honestly have very little need or want to get my PE, not sure I have the time. I always kind of regretted not taking my FE in college. Would there be any benefit to get my FE at this point? I was a MECH E in college but if anything I’d be more of a civil now I guess?

New exam conversation

I wanna know more people’s opinion and almost want to take the test. I already have pmp but based on what’s changing on the exam I think even if you study the content out there now for the current exam you could still pass the new exam. Wanted to post this and just get a convo going. I passed a month ish ago and think I could go ahead and take the new test and pass. They can’t go in depth on ai it’ll be boiler level and common sense in my opinion. If anything business acumen is super basic so o almost see the new test being easier. AR also has a instagram post saying he might think it’s easier as well.

Any opinions or convo is encouraged!

Random thought for this thread

Is there a way to organize this thread in a way that we don’t see the same posts over and over again? Or at least show them in a way that is productive?

I don’t think we all need to see the same posts every few hours,

  1. I passed and here’s what I did - we all know we did the udemy, Tia, YouTube videos for AR and DM, and used study hall.

  2. How should I prepare for the exam, see question 1. It’s like people can’t be bothered to scroll for 2 minutes to see what people find helpful.

  3. Is my study hall score good enough to pass? The 70% threshold is as good of a guess as anyone has. It depends on how good of a test taker and your questions are. Theres also probably 20 posts with similar scores you could reference and get your answer.

  4. The questions people get wrong that they post and need help understanding. No qualms on this one.

  5. Questions about the exam experience. There are so many posts describing the test center, the at home exam, and the rules. Pearson and PMI also are very clear on the rules and you could just look at the rules and figure it out. Takes probably less time than creating a post and waiting for people to respond.

I am new to Reddit so not sure there is a way to do this but can you have some sort of subfolder group where you can go see all the different posts, like make a folder for all the 5 types of posts and be able to click in and see what people have to say, or even filter out things? Like I don’t need to see people’s passing stories anymore since I don’t need to know how to study. But I am able to help answer some questions here and there that are confusing or about online exams.

I don’t think a lot of people taking this test should take this test.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on how to qualify for the exam without PM experience and how people work the system. These posts often are followed up by failed tests and excuses.

I think this test was meant to be taken by actual project managers, not engineers, not assistant pms, not scrum masters, not people that could fudge the numbers or job descriptions to be “eligible”.

Passing your pmp without supporting experience means literally nothing so don’t think you can just get this certificate and get good paying jobs. If you have a bachelors and a pmp then yeah you’ll get some interviews. If you have a bachelors, 10 years experience and a pmp yeah you’ll
Get a ton of interviews. If you have a bachelors and 20 years experience and a pmp I promise the interview is not because of the pmp.

The PMP will not get you a job. It may get you in the room with an individual but nothing more.

I have 17 years experience, 6 years as a hiring manager, and just tried to get my pmp to see what it took. It took 10 YouTube videos. I’ve never given the time of day to anyone without a bachelors and 5 years experience to be a pm. The pmp won’t help it’s a quiz.

For an engineer with pm experience and 5+ years experience it’ll pay off (your company will pay for it) and you can throw it on your LinkedIn. If you do not work for a company that will pay for this certification and training then walk away. It means nothing to the company it shouldn’t mean anything to you.

Online exam review!

I heard horror stories about the online exam and I want to report back.

This was 100% the option for me. I have a nice desk at home that I used to study the entire time with a nice chair. The comfort of my own things was enough to try the online exam. The check in process took 12 minutes Becuase I did not remove my headset from my desk (instructions clearly state not allowed so that’s my fault). So they had to do a little more investigation. I got checked in and was able to start at 7:42 instead of waiting till 8. Did not get any feed back from the proctor. You don’t have time to look around or anything. If you are a mouthy reader maybe not for you.

The actual exam was flawless, I am plugged into my router so I have great internet.

I took my exam and the website does not show you the results but I found a work around using this link to get results instantly just as you would at a test center.

https://auth-certification.pmi.org/authorize/pearsonvue?registrationid=your#here&action=individualScoreReport

Replace “your#here” with your Pearson registration test id not your PMI id.

Overall I wouldn’t be scared to do the online exam if you are good with tech, can read the instructions (they aren’t hard to abide by), have a quiet area (no kids or a partner walking around), and have good internet.

Tik tok and instagram

Why do all the people commenting on TikTok and Instagram posts seem to be way too young, illegitimate, unqualified, or just plain not a real PM and act like it’s super important? I mean I am ready to be done studying and all but i don’t think this gets you real jobs like it may have back in the day? Or am I underestimating this. I don’t think especially in my field anyone’s going to see a pmp and no real pm experience with projects under a certain dollar amount and scope and even call them for an interview. Where as if you had the experience with no pmp your getting an interview. Idk what I’m really after. But seems like a lot of scammers out there now.

Third3rock notes & SH essentials.

How long are the third3rock notes? What are the sh essentials? I took the Andrew Raymdal class and have the test in 10 days. Should I be worried or should I buy the notes and essentials? I don’t have time to read a ton more stuff going back over what I already did on the AR class
