High cost of laminate has me considering cheap quartz

At $63/square foot for laminate installed, I am highly considering Lowe's quartz that starts at $75/sq foot. Or maybe even "SenSa Siberia/Polished Granite" (looking for something light). Tell me why I should or should not? It's for a short term rental. Thanks!

I should add that this is in an area where there is only one local fabricator so there's no option to get a competitive bid on the laminate. And Lowe's does install in the area so either they travel or have worked a deal with the local fabricator.

Soapstone Alternatives

I love the look of soapstone but have been told it requires a lot of upkeep. I was looking at a Quartz alternative called "broadway black" - but read reviews on reddit that it scratches easily. What are some suggestions for a countertop that has the look of a matte black soapstone? Thanks!

Pool finally complete! AND outdoor kitchen almost done

Salt pool just got pebbled and filled over the weekend. They came and are putting chlorine, cleaning it and teaching us today and tomorrow. Then weekly checks and chemicals.

Pool builder is going to fix the remaining small issues before we sign off. The sprinklers are being installed this week, then grass.

Outdoor kitchen—Blaze LTE+ 40 inch grill, functional sink, stone all around, Bahamas White polished granite with a 10inch overhang.

We live in Tampa Bay and have 2 kids under 7 who are eager to jump in later in the week.

Thx for the feedback and help throughout this process.

Glue marks under marble

We just had calacatta marble installed. There are “glue marks” (large circles) all over the marble. The fabricator said not to worry and this will evaporate over a few days. They used clear DAP.

Please tell me this is the case. 😅

Unknown solid surface color

Any ideas on what this may be or something really close? I asked about another one a few weeks back and Reddit came thru and hit it exactly. This is another building on a university campus and apparently no one keeps any records there on what was used in the past.

Would this work?

This granite countertop is in a bathroom at my job and it is sagging severely. Outside of replacing them the only other idea I have is to beef up the framing in minor ways. Can anyone tell me would my idea actually work?

A. Add more cripples for extra support. A minimum of double what's already there.

B. Turn all existing cripples 90° so that they actually add support as intended.

C. Run a board flush with the bottom stud to the wall length wise to fill in any space.

D. Put whatever size blocks I can fit under space so that the frame has its own support to rest the weight on or possibly building a box to run length wise for the same purpose with the added benefit of being more asthetically pleasing when all is said and done.

Are we being reasonable

This is the template from our fabricator. They want us to sign off and we made the changes as you can see from the hand writing. The countertop fabricator insists that the seam is regularly at the sink. We are purchasing two slabs that we have already picked out. They are waiting for our approval and we are adamant not to have the seams at the sink where they will attract more dirt than the places where we have requested the seams. The fabricator is fighting us, but we are standing firm. Will plan to discuss again tomorrow morning.

A bit of background: we did purchase from Lowe’s, so worst case, I will go back to Lowe’s and tell them the issues we are having. Curious if others think our seams are unreasonable? I mean, we know why we want them there and it works for us. Does it make it difficult to install? After we can agree on the seams, we are planning to pay for the digital layout to match up the grain. We just seem stuck at this point.

Narrowed it down to 2 granite choices

My husband and I have narrowed it down to 2 granite choices for our kitchen and bathroom.

Pic 1 is White Thunder. Pics 2 and 3 are zoomed in parts of White Thunder

Pic 4 is Leathered Lennon. Pics 5 and 6 are zoomed in parts of it.

We do not have cupboard colors picked out yet.

I'm reading on here that leathered granite is more for outdoor kitchens and it's harder to clean.

For those who have leathered, do you find it hard to keep clean with kids?

Husband didn't like the look of polished Lennon, only the leathered option.

Thank you!

Iron Blue Honed Quartzite Countertops

Finally had our Iron Blue honed quartzite countertops installed. I love them and need backsplash ideas. Should I go with frosted/matte glass elongated subway tiles to lighten up the room or something else. I'm trying to avoid dark colors or a busy pattern. Anyone else install Iron Blue? As an FYI, this is not Ijen Blue - Ijen Blue is much lighter so I classify the color as moody. Also going to seal it with Akemi Darkener Super for a 'wet look' seal to bring out the depth of colors.

Marble vs Quartzite vs Granite — honest comparison from someone who works with all three daily

People ask me this constantly, so here's my honest take after years of working with natural stone. No brand bias, just what I've seen in real installations.

MARBLE
Best for: Bathrooms, low-traffic areas, fireplace surrounds, anyone who loves patina
Honest downside: Etches with acid (lemon, vinegar, wine), scratches easier than granite. Polished marble in a busy kitchen will show wear — that's just reality.
Hidden upside: Honed marble is far more forgiving than people think. And nothing else has that depth of veining.

QUARTZITE
Best for: Kitchen countertops, high-traffic areas, people who want marble looks with more durability
Honest downside: The market is full of mislabeled stone. "Soft quartzite" is often just marble sold under a different name. Always do a scratch test before buying.
Hidden upside: True quartzite (hard, crystalline) is one of the most durable natural stones available. Barcelona, Taj Mahal, Naica — properly identified, these are exceptional.

GRANITE
Best for: Kitchens, outdoor kitchens, anyone who wants zero maintenance
Honest downside: Visually busy patterns aren't for everyone, and some people find it looks "dated" — though classic granites never really go out of style.
Hidden upside: Hardest of the three, most resistant to heat, scratches, and acids. If you want to forget about maintenance, granite is your stone.

Quick decision guide:

  • Want beauty, okay with some care → Marble
  • Want beauty + durability, willing to verify what you're buying → Quartzite
  • Want durability + zero stress → Granite

Happy to answer specific questions — what stone are you considering?

Help with stain identification

After the cleaning person finished with our bathroom last time I noticed these white stains. They have cleaned our bathroom for years. Is this etching? Water stain? It doesn't come off with gentle pressure. Considering just getting the whole counter fixed professionally but wanted to see if this is fixable myself. Thanks in advance.

Bianco superior quartzite with a touch of cristallo throughout

From start to finish our kitchen took just shy of months to finish from tear down to completion yesterday. We started tearing down 4th of July last year and yesterday it is 95% done. Minus water hook ups and filler.

Help with vanity countertop

I need some help with what countertop to go with based on our materials picked and AI inspo pick. Vanity cabinet will be oak Kemper cabinets stained in Kanga, bedrosians mystere tile floors, and the sage green tiles for the walls. Anyone with similar colors have photos?

It’s me again, the person who found their dream countertops only for them not to be available…

I don’t know if anyone will remember but a few weeks back I posted about finding my dream quartzite but it wasn’t available. Since then I’ve been looking high and low to find something similar. And while there have been some close contenders, nothing I found had the depth of color and movement that I loved on those other slabs.

Well today I gave up the search and ended up locking down two slabs of “Aqua Cristallo”. I actually was inspired by some of the recent posts here that showed Cristallo variants that looked really nice. So thanks you guys! I’d love to know what you all think of what I ended up with!

And, I’m still holding out hope that I’m going to get that paradise crystal after all. The fabricator is hoping to have a little bit of extra that I’m going to try to have turned into a coffee table for my living room! So fingers crossed that comes through. Thanks to all of you for the suggestions of similar materials!

Fabricator made all cuts on our marble slab without confirming placement with me - despite agreeing to do so.

Basically the title. I'm absolutely crushed. I spent a year saving and choosing the perfect calacatta marble slabs. I carefully chose my fabricator (or so I thought).

I asked the owner both on site and via text message to confirm (and he confirmed via text), to please show me the placement prior to making any cuts. This slab has some imperfections as all natural stone has and I wanted to make sure I liked the deisgn (after all, it's the centerpiece of our home and a major investment).

Install is next week and he asked if one of his guys could come buy for a few final measurements. When he came by, I said, "great! Again, can you show me the cuts via photos or I can come to the shop before you cut it?" He said..."OH! We already cut everything." My heart sank. Really? After all of this you just CUT it without taking 5 minutes of your day to confirm with me? Honestly why?

They made a design decision to bookmatch the marble on the island. I absolutely hate it. It's not our vibe.

He said our island was an odd shape and they "had to" do it this way. I totally get that - but that doesn't take away your responsibility to communicate when we've agreed to do so.

How do you handle this? I'm honestly just so disappointed.
