Bridge repair work
A while ago I posted about a Z-scale fixer-upper layout that I got off eBay. One of the things wrong with it was that one of the bridges was gone. My brother was able to 3D-print a replacement. I also made some progress cleaning the tracks. The main section of the layout is now fully functional. I’m still trying to figure out how I can clean the tracks in a long tunnel…
Just wanted to heap some praise on the XC40
That’s all. What a brilliant car. So cleverly designed, an elegant and timeless exterior with a smart and well-made interior. Looks and feels upscale without being pretentious or shouty. I enjoy my Tesla for many reasons, bit man there’s a satisfaction to just yanking a big ol’ doorhandle to open a door or to be able to simply press a button to make the car do something. I love that this car still predates that screens-only approach that sadly Volvo has moved towards as well. And that its suspension is unabashedly tuned for comfort while still perfectly capable on winding mountain roads.
I’m visiting my parents for a week and came by train so I’m spending quite a bit of time driving around in my parents’ cars. As lifelong Mercedes and BMW drivers, it took a little convincing to get them to consider a Volvo. My mom got in an accident with her trusty X3 last year and so I took her to a Volvo dealership. She wanted something smaller and so I thought she’d like an EX30, but the moment we walked in the door she went straight to the XC40 and ordered an XC40 Plus in Forest Lake the same day. She’s in love with it
I’m pissed
My China-built Highland is less than three years old and has started to rust where the driver-side quarter is welded to the body of the car. I’ve been trying to get Tesla to look into this for months but due to Tesla’s famously woeful customer service, I’ve gotten nowhere yet. I’m the meantime the rust spot is happily growing in size.
Last weekend, after I took the car through an automatic car wash that I’ve used for years, I noticed that a large patch of paint has come off the rocker panel, exposing the primer underneath. I knew this was an issue on early 3s, but I’d hoped that Tesla would have figured this out by now.
It really is a shame. The car has been excellent otherwise (it’s already covered more than 90k largely trouble-free kilometers). But issues like these, along with Tesla’s piss-poor customer service have really soured the experience. I really hope for the sake of others that my car is an exception…
Update on the rattly W2
I posted previously about our new Miele W2 that’s been making an annoying ticking sound. Miele were entirely unhelpful but the place we bought the washer and dryer from was great and exchanged the machine with no questions asked (thanks Coolblue!).
The new machine came today. The top plate on this one doesn’t creak when you press down on it, and it doesn’t tick as much as the last one. But on this one the drain pump is much noisier and causes the machine to buzz. I’m done, I’m accepting this one as it is because I’ve grown tired of dealing with this. But my final conclusion is - also based on what other W2 owners have said, some of whom have also gone through at least 2 machines - that these machines have a fit and finish issue that causes them to make unwelcome noises… Although overall I think this is a decent product, at this price point my expectations have not been met. I’m left with a slightly bitter taste because the T2 dryer isn’t exactly trouble-free either, but I hope that at least they’ll last us a long time.
Miele W2 ticking
As requested here’s a recording of the ticking sound our brand new Miele W2 makes while washing. It’s sometimes accompanied by the kind of creaking you can hear as I push the top plate down near the end of the video.
Disappointed
About a month ago we replaced our aging Bosch washer and dryer with a Miele W2 (WQ 1000 WPS Nova) washing machine and a T2 dryer. The washing machine has already developed an irritating rattle that Miele refuses to fix because, according to their technician, it isn’t a technical defect. The dryer has started throwing error codes (F47 and F99, the latter is resolved now). Thankfully the place we bought the machines from (not Miele directly) does care about satisfied customers and is replacing the washing machine next week. I have to make a new appointment with Miele about the dryer’s issues.
I was honestly expecting much more from Miele, especially at this price point. We’re extremely satisfied with our Miele kitchen appliances and my parents have had the same washer and dryer for over 20 years that they only got rid of because they were moving to a different country. So this is a bit of a shock. I really hope this is just a bad start but now I’m reading that the new generation of washers and dryers seem problematic…
I guess I’m mostly venting but have others dealt with problematic W2 and T2 machines?
I was somewhat stunned the other day when I found what looks to be a rust spot just above the left taillight where the quarter panel is welded to the body of the car. I contacted Tesla about it and they sent me to a body shop for an appraisal. Guy at the body shop agreed: this is rust. I expect this to be covered under warranty, but will have to wait to hear back from them. Looks like I was right on time spotting it - the car has 79k kilometers on it, the basic warranty expires at 80k.
Some more info on the car: it’s a China-made car we bought new in October of 2023, it must have been one of the first Highlands off the assembly line.
Be sure to have a good look around your car.
