Found near a creek in north GA. I initially thought maybe just sandstone, but some things are just throwing me off. It scratches glass when I press firmly, but glass also seems to scratch it, though I have to press harder for that, so I guess it's roughly the same hardness, maybe a tad harder than glass. Weight is about as expected. Feels smooth to the touch. Luster is pretty dull, but I do see a shimmering effect on parts of it, and it looks like there are some short bands of some glassy crystal, which you can see in the last 2 photos, I guess that's probably quartz? Mostly opaque, but some light comes through in the thinner sections when a flashlight is held up to it. Does not react with UV, and is not magnetic. Any help is appreciated <3
I'm very new to rock tumbling. Other than one I used when I was a kid, this is my first batch I've got going now, quartz and quartzite in a 4lb barrel. I don't really expect it to turn out great since it's my first time, and the instructions in the manual gave some advice that most other resources recommend not doing, like keeping rocks about the same size rather than varying sizes. I was excited, so I went ahead and started them, but I think the barrel was probably underfilled which I didn't realize until later, so I added ceramic filler about halfway through stage 1. The instructions really didn't say anything regarding the speed settings, which range 1-3, 70-120 RPM roughly. I started out with it on 3, I figured for stage 1 with harder stones, that would be fine, but after reading a few other resources, now I'm not so sure. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to go as slow as I would like for the later stages or for a softer materials, but it is what it is. I'll probably get another one once I learn the ropes, but this will do for now.
Speed settings are still confusing me though. What speed would you recommend in general? What would you recommend for quartz and quartzite? Should I go ahead and slow it down now, or just do that in the later stages?
My fiancé's grandmother sadly passed this year, and my in-laws gave me this stand mixer since mine is messed up. As far as we know, it works and is completely unused. My fiancé's grandmother was an awesome lady, but she couldn't cook or bake at all lol
I wanted to see if there's anything I should know before I use it. Are there health or safety hazards I should be aware of? Is it highly valuable unused? Any information/advice would be appreciated!
