We are told in Emma that Jane Fairfax is an orphan, her father was an officer who died in action very young.
She inherited only a few hundred pounds and lives on the charity of relatives. Nothing was left for her education or support. She will have to become a governess which was, it seems, horrendous. She won’t even be able to support herself in genteel poverty like her aunts do.
Was it really the case that when an officer died in service, his family was left with nothing? Is this truly how His Majesty’s army treated its people? How desperate do you have to be to go to war under these conditions when you have a family to provide for?
Has anyone thought about this?
