Picot size

I always thought that the size was measured horizontally, along the core thread. A 1cm picot had 1cm of thread, and was 0.5cm high.

Recent reading informs me that a 2cm picot is 1cm high, and uses 2cm thread.

My picots always seemed smaller than the picture, but I thought it was a skill or tension issue, not misreading the pattern.

Is there a standard way to measure? Or do we need to make a test piece each way, and compare that to the pattern?

(The math makes sense, no worries with that. Picots are usually artistic, not structural, so best length depends on the eye of the beholder. I'm still curious whether my picots are shorter than standard.)

Another reason to vote for shuttle tatting

I haven't tatted in years, and pulled out my sample and WIP bag.

The WIP bag had a needle project, but it doesn't say what size. This isn't a problem with shuttle tatting.

Does anyone know the diameter of each needle size?

Is there a book that has a systematic review of the theory? Advanced Gregg books clearly say things like, "This lesson uses all the concepts in Lessons 1-6. The next chapter ... 7-12." Currently I'm alternating reviewing the final exercises for a theory chapter with a speed-building passage, but would like to combine them.
