Help understanding a pattern

Hi! I am trying to do a coaster pattern found on Handy Hands for my third project. It seems relatively straightforward which is awesome. At the top of the page, it says “Ring and Chain method - Two shuttles” Does this mean it’s a regular two-shuttle pattern, where the thread is continuous between the two? Would this work as a shuttle & ball pattern instead (i prefer that)? Seeing as the instructions are to cut between each round anyways, I don’t see why it wouldn’t, but perhaps I am missing something.

If it has to be two shuttles instead, how do you know which shuttle to use? The previous pattern I followed that used 2 shuttles had a video that I was able to follow, watching when they switched, which this one does not.

Lastly, for the last round, are the 4 rings all connected using the same picot? So, the first ring you make a picot, and the next three all join to that same one?

Thank you all!

Baroque Crochet Cotton vs Aunt Lydia Crochet Thread?

What is the difference between the two if any? I know they are both the same weight but that’s about it. I’m just curious if one is better than the other for tatting.

Connecting tatted pieces?

I'm working my way through Robin Perfetti's Four Dozen Tatted Bookmarks, a project which will leave me with - surprise, surprise! - four dozen tatted bookmarks.

Guess who bought an eReader two weeks ago 🫣

So I've been trying to figure out what to do with them, and one idea is to somehow connect them all into a larger piece.

Like a doily, a small curtain, or a wallhanging?

Does anyone have a suggestion of how to actually do that? In crochet I'd just work arches of chain stitches around each bookmark and connect those to each other as I go along...

What should I do in tatting though? Does anyone have examples of similar projects or suggestions of patterns?

beginner: question about inner rings

I've been using books to make some doilies. and I started with needle tatting then switched over to shuttles when they got delivered.

Since I've gotten the hang of shuttle tatting a little, I was trying to work through some of the patterns from the book I borrowed, but now I've been kind of scratching my head because I don't really understand what this means: "the last picot is worked by tying the two ends together to form a picot". How is this picot formed??? I've been trying to search google by typing in the specific sentence but all i get are methods on making drop shaped rings, not a complete inner circle.

I would appreciate some insight on this..!! thank you very much in advance ><

(attached image is a screenshot from the book I'm using)

Picot size

I always thought that the size was measured horizontally, along the core thread. A 1cm picot had 1cm of thread, and was 0.5cm high.

Recent reading informs me that a 2cm picot is 1cm high, and uses 2cm thread.

My picots always seemed smaller than the picture, but I thought it was a skill or tension issue, not misreading the pattern.

Is there a standard way to measure? Or do we need to make a test piece each way, and compare that to the pattern?

(The math makes sense, no worries with that. Picots are usually artistic, not structural, so best length depends on the eye of the beholder. I'm still curious whether my picots are shorter than standard.)

First tatting project complete! I have questions and constructive feedback is absolutely appreciated!

This is my first successful creation made with size 10 thread and two shuttles. I just randomly made rings and chains before attempting this. Pattern is from a YouTube tutorial. If you see any glaring errors or wrong technique (especially around the picots) please please please point them out so I can improve!

I’m pretty pleased with this for it being my first go around but I wasn’t very confident with some of the techniques and I have a couple questions.

  1. After making a picot, do you add the second half of a double stitch again before continuing the pattern and then go to your first post picot double stitch? (I hope that makes sense)

  2. Do you tie your two threads together before you start or can you join your chaining thread when it’s time for the first chain and operate from there? I tied the threads together but I feel like it just created unnecessary bulk.

  3. Ball vs second shuttle: does it matter which route you take/ is one method considered better? I used two shuttles because I had extra thread already wound on a second shuttle but I almost ran out so I see the appeal of a ball but think it might get annoying. Idk though.

That’s all the questions I have for now and thank you in advance for any feedback or answers you can provide!

Another reason to vote for shuttle tatting

I haven't tatted in years, and pulled out my sample and WIP bag.

The WIP bag had a needle project, but it doesn't say what size. This isn't a problem with shuttle tatting.

Does anyone know the diameter of each needle size?

Half way done with row X and row XI

These two rounds are going quite fast, I’m completing both rounds of scallops so I don’t get bored! I’m considering these scallops the second to last large element, the final row is going to be the finale.

Learning to tatt

Hi everyone!

I am very interested in learning tatting. I dont know much about it. I have tried watching a video on YouTube, but my fingers are still very confused. Does anyone know of other resources I look at? I find this all so pretty! But it confuses my brain.

First ever set completed!

Guys! 5 months in! Got my shuttles and thread around new years! It's all wobbly and crooked but I am addicted! Had to share it because, just like any beginner I had to start a few times over because of one just one! Just one little tiny mistake! Oh the tatting gods how cruel you are!

Anyway, if u are beginner don't give up. Give up later when you have learned to do it well.

Look at my loops!!

I wanna be clear here:

I did NOT make a bracelet.

I am brand new to tatting & I was simply practicing learning my loops.

I am simply (now) wearing my loops because I'm very excited, & i know continuing to look at my loops will keep me excited to learn more & keep going.

And I'm sharing my loops here because many of you (wonderful humans) helped me so much when I was stuck, & when I couldn't even make one loop!

So, anyway...

Look at my loops!!

Update: figured out the missing pattern

I did the large ones (size 10 Lizbeth) several years ago, before I learned about creating a front side/back side. Makes all the difference for this pattern

The small one is size 20 thread.
