Yes I’m the man behind a lot of the posts on this subreddit. My piece placed 2nd place and I finally saw it 2 mins before closing the exhibit. It might look familiar to some but I’m very pleased to have been a part of California’s state fair.
Wow this doily is really coming together. Don’t mind the center, I split a little water on it. I’m so happy to finally finish this round, however the next round is exactly the same as the last row of the monster doily. I haven’t even started it yet but I’m already sick of it, that same row has already consumed two weeks of my life! But no matter how long it takes it I’m too far along to stop.
Going to go see my doily at the Sacramento State Fair tomorrow. I will post pictures
I may have mentioned not liking making individual motif rounds that Jan typically utilizes, however I’m doing it in the name of having this beautiful doily. I really like all of the interesting shaped doilies he made, and they are typically my go to. Most tatting doilies are round, so it’s a good change from the usual.
I’m only in row 4 but this is a medium sized doily I have wanted to tat for years too! I’m finally getting around to making all the doilies I have wanted for years.
The doily is getting too big to even take nice photos of. These last two rounds will be the final test, do I have enough energy to finish them. These rounds have so many rings and decorative picots, it’s getting hard to find a comfortable way to hold it too because of its size. I’m already plotting on my next doily… thinking another large Jan doily in a size 40 thread…
Or maybe I should be asking if it’s even real! Many people on Xiaohongshu were torn over my bracelet saying it’s cheap African jade or jadeite. I genuinely have no clue. I’m hoping someone can break down what my bangle actually is.
These two rounds are going quite fast, I’m completing both rounds of scallops so I don’t get bored! I’m considering these scallops the second to last large element, the final row is going to be the finale.
These rows were quite treacherous but I’m glad to have completed them! Now swiftly moving on to the scallops! One of my favorite elements of my last large piece!
I’m not really going to post updates row by row unless that’s something you guys are wanting to see, but I want to show you the first milestone row. Sorry for the spam, I will keep you guys posted as I climb tatting Mount Everest!
I just recently completed another large Jan doily, and since scratching that off of my list I have been figuring out what to make. This doily has always sat at the back of my mind, so now I must do it. I’m done with the easy rows, it all goes up from here(I’m only on row 3 😟).. individual motifs, large multi ring elements and so on. But it will all be worth it. Let me know your guys thoughts on the monster doily, any information about this print becoming available, and talk on Jan’s new book? So much mystery behind this doily.
This doily has to be one of Jan Stawasz’s greatest pieces. Although I started this doily sometime mid March, I have attempted to tat this doily multiple times since I started tatting. It inspired me to learn the art of tatting. At the end of the photos I have included the first time I attempted to make it, and how I never finished it. I tried it about 6 years ago. Yeah I obviously learned a lot since that… but I also included another Jan piece I attempted 6 years ago as well. It’s cool to get to look back on your old pieces and see how much you have learned and techniques you have changed to make tatting work for you. Like if I could tell 14 year old me that I could snug my chains I would probably be a master by now!
Anyways I want to be off to the next thing now! I’m wondering what other Jan doily I want to cross off of my list! Any suggestions are appreciated!!
